What makes a cyberbreach newsworthy, and which require regulatory disclosure, are increasingly squishy issues, Tatyana Shumsky reports in today’s Business & Tech. section. Barely 1% of around 9,000 publicly listed U.S. companies told the Securities and Exchange Commission about hacks since the beginning of 2010, but there were more than 2,600 corporate hacks among public and private companies during that time. Companies are getting hacked more frequently but aren’t disclosing the more frequent incidents in their regulatory filings, a trend that worries investors.

Finance chiefs say the reason they don’t report breaches is because the damage isn’t material enough to influence investment decisions. Still, boards consider cyberthreats a high priority and are spending increasing sums to defend their firms. Companies spent $86 billion globally on protection efforts last year, an increase of 18%, according to Gartner Inc. The research firm expects such expenses to reach $94 billion this year.

BlackBerry returns to local market-INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

BlackBerry has returned to Korea after a three-year absence with its first Android smartphone.

The Priv, the company�s first smartphone, was introduced in other key markets in November. The Canadian smartphone maker unveiled the new device after failing to reinvent itself in the face of stiff competition from Samsung Electronics and Apple.

BlackBerry silently withdrew from Korea in 2013, four years after entering. The Priv model is not even the latest from BlackBerry, given it already began shipping its second Android phone DTEK50 in the United States and Canada last month.

Damian Tay, senior director of Asia-Pacific product management at BlackBerry, told reporters at the unveiling event on Tuesday in central Seoul that the Priv�s launch in Korea was delayed as the product had to �go through various tests and certification process required for the Korean market.�

Priv is a rarity among smartphones, given it combines BlackBerry�s signature Qwerty physical keyboard and a touchscreen. The model may catch on with traditional BlackBerry fans who are nostalgic about their old phones. Before the Priv, BlackBerry phones were powered by its own operating system.

Tay also stressed the strong security features of the Priv - a series of security-focused apps built specifically for it and a built-in password manager. But the model misses a few now-common protection options such as a fingerprint reader or iris scanner.

The 5.4-inch dual-edge screened phone with an 18-megapixel rear-facing camera will be sold through SK Telecom, KT and a few online stores. Retail prices start at 598,000 won ($534.) Sales of the Priv began on Tuesday.

This ER.... will we finally see a reversal of the continued downward trend of revenues? I for one would like to see a reversal of the total revenue declines... finally.

I am also expecting a statement that Radar will finally be officially launched, with perhaps a high profile customer or two (wishful thinking), and a statement that BlackBerry's HW Division has achieved break even or profitable status ....

BlackBerry to resell app from startup that found major Android bug

TORONTO, Sept 21 (Reuters) - BlackBerry Ltd has agreed to offer anti-hacking software from a startup that last year discovered a major Android bug, it said on Wednesday, as the once-dominant smartphone company seeks to leverage ties to corporate and government clients to boost its software revenue.

BlackBerry�s enterprise sales force will resell Zimperium�s zIPS mobile threat protection application to customers of its mobile device management services, the two companies said in a statement.

Zimperium said the product costs $10 a month per device, with bulk discounts available, and that BlackBerry will take an undisclosed cut of sales.

Zimperium, founded in 2010 by a former security researcher for the Israeli military, uses complex algorithms to churn through reams of data to defend against hacking of devices running on Apple Inc�s iOS and Alphabet Inc�s Android operating systems.

The service will not be available to users of BlackBerry�s own operating system. BlackBerry�s two newest handsets run on Android, and more such devices are expected from the company.

Alphabet�s Google and Samsung started issuing monthly security fixes for Android phones soon after a Zimperium employee last year discovered the Stagefright hacking software, which allows attackers to access sensitive content. (Reporting by Alastair Sharp; Editing by Richard Chang)

Thanks as always!

I had a few after your last Q&A, but forgot them. So for now:

1) Effectiveness of BB hardening of Android: Given the almost weekly reports of new (or new variants) of Android malware, how many of the new attacks were prevented by BB's hardening of Android itself. Ignore mitigating factors, such as "don't use unfamiliar app stores," or "don't install dubious-looking apps." If the malware is installed on the phone, what percentage fail to work because of BB's hardening efforts. Looking to see if the hardening efforts are providing any real benefit to the average Joe user.

2) Has BB applied any of the attack techniques to BB10 to see if BB10 would be susceptible?

3) Where is BB10.3.3? Will it update the list of Certificate Authorities? More and more websites are getting SSL certificates from Let's Encrypt because they are essentially free. BB10 doesn't recognize Let's Encrypt as a CA and makes the user confirm security exceptions while browsing. Will 10.3.3 remedy that?

4) How is BlackBerry's relationship with IBM going? IBM doesn't seem to think enabling email to perform searches on server to be a priority. Is this an IBM issue or BES issue? Searching email on server is a function supported by MS Exchange servers.

5) Movirtu Virtual SIM - How many carriers have launched the Movirtu product so far? Two so far? Indonesia and Hong Kong? How has uptake/end user reception been? Does BBRY charge the carrier, or is there a revenue sharing agreement?

6) BlackBerry Radar - Any announcement?

7) Has BlackBerry ever googled "gps tracker for kids?" Doing so yields a number of companies (and several kick-starter companies) that provide families with a gps unit, cellular data plan and an app/website that allows parents to track where the unit is. Some units include one or two-way calling, geofencing, automated notifications when the unit leaves geofenced locations, etc. Seems it's almost the same as a BlackBerry device (with or without phone capabilities) combined with BlackBerry Radar/Protect software but applied to small kids or autistic kids. LEGOLand even trialed such a device in one of its European parks. There's a market for this and BlackBerry has all the components to make it happen on a bigger scale. There is no hardware arms race in this space because these are trackers, not smart phones. No one cares if the tech is 10 years old, just as long as the GPS can get a good, reliable signal. They come with recurring service revenue. Addressable market keeps increasing because people seem to like making more little people (in some countries that is).

Mobileiron now worth 220 million USD.. would JC be up for another challenge? I'm guessing there's less senergies compared to the Good acquisition. Plus they have/had 632 employees back in Dec 2014 compared to Good which had 470 employees when they did the announcement.
