Can someone please dumb it down.

Sure, they are authorized to purchase and retire 25% of the average daily volume of convertible bonds in the open market. In addition, they can purchase larger quantities or blocks of bonds agreed upon by the owners of those bonds. This program is not to be confused with their right to recall bonds after the November date has passed, at the premium of 4% over the face value of the debt. I suspect that a holder wants to sell their holdings to BlackBerry now as opposed to waiting for the recall date as the price in the open market is the same price they would receive on a mandatory retirement of the debt. It isn't much of a program if they are limited to open market purchases of 25% of the dollar value of trading each day, but if someone wants out, it's a great move on BlackBerry's part to do it now. It really sends a message that Chen wants to cut costs, doesn't need the debt any more and wants to show the world BB is back in business. Smart move yet we will have to see who takes Chen up on his offer.

I suspect it's Prem himself who wants to cash in, as he stands to gain more from his other pile of shares if he allows Chen to make a move that puts BlackBerry in the black then he would by holding on for a few more months

Thanks for the clarification Morgan! As I skimmed this news this morning, I was wondering if this was related to or had an impact on the Nov potential recalls!

And relatively "neutral" from someone who has never missed an opportunity to bash BBRY up until now.

Here is some more clarity on those bonds:

    "LONG-TERM DEBT

    Convertible Debentures

In fiscal 2014, Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (“Fairfax”) and other institutional investors invested in the Company through a $1.25 billion private placement of the Debentures. Interest on the Debentures is payable quarterly in arrears at a rate of 6% per annum. The Debentures have a term of seven years and each $1,000 of Debentures are convertible at any time into 100 common shares of the Company for a total of 125 million common shares at a price of $10.00 per share for all Debentures, subject to adjustments. The Company has the option to redeem the Debentures after November 13, 2016 at specified redemption prices in specified periods. Covenants associated with the Debentures include limitations on the Company’s total indebtedness.

Under specified events of default, the outstanding principal and any accrued interest on the Debentures become immediately due and payable upon request of holders holding not less than 25% of the principal amount of the Debentures then outstanding. During an event of default the interest rate rises to 10% per annum.

The Debentures are subject to a change of control provision whereby the Company would be required to make an offer to repurchase the Debentures at 115% of par value if a person or group (not affiliated with Fairfax) acquires 35% of the Company’s outstanding common shares, acquires all or substantially all of its assets, or if the Company merges with another entity and the Company’s existing shareholders hold less than 50% of the common shares of the surviving entity.

John Chen is in a big hurry to recall those bonds, I can't imagine why he would start something this early without there being a holder of bonds who wants to go to cash now.

I don't like this. They are supposed to be pitching the Dtek at enterprise not consumers. Pokmon Go is aimed at adult children. this confuses the message.

Why not? It's targeted at Enterprise, but if you can pick up consumers along the way with a simple tweet or article I'd say go for it.

Good to see lots of improvements for BBM even for ios, very promising changes and in the right direction. A little more focused effort could make BBM alone change the game for blackberry in no time.

    Hi guys !

Read this article on SA, thought it would make me angry (bc the title) but in fact very interesting points (and specific IP infos).
The "patent troll" sticker has a meaning for IP specialists, apparently, that is unknown for us "general audience" so, don't get caught (see comments, maybe the title/content will be edited when you'll read it idk).

The New Patent Troll: BlackBerry - BlackBerry Ltd. (NASDAQ:BBRY) | Seeking Alpha

With the case now filed versus Avaya, BlackBerry has officially entered into the patent litigation game. It is a long hard road to land a patent license, and I am sure, as the case progresses more focus will be put on the case. I fully expect more litigation to be filed in the future targeting other tech companies. Stay tuned.

Everyone needs to get ready for "Blackberry Mach 2" in September. Chen is gonna kill the phone division. There's absolutely no reason for someone to buy these new phones. In a saturated market, you better bring flash and invention or you will be lost in the sea of identical phones. I'd like to hear someone sell me on why this phone will do any better than the Priv. I demand an answer!!!

OH I get it, a sale is a sale, but the current pitch is "Security", and Pokmon Go just screams insecure to me.

Android is insecure lol...although bbrys is hardened, I don't see how having Pokmon available screams insecure. One of the selling points and reasons for the transitions to android is the availability of ALL the apps...even frivolous games like Pokmon... BBRY gets the 'added security' they provide to their android platform and the limitless access to consumer apps...and yes, a sale is a sale

I think this may be true, but it also allows BlackBerry to skim an extra percent or two if the price ever drops between now and November on the open market (it has before). It would only do this if a current holder doesn't want to approach BlackBerry directly and also wants to sell early. Also, I think BlackBerry has the discretion to accept certain offers vs others for non-public deals, and could potentially negotiate harder with non-friendly parties.

    Sign up with phone number

The BBM update brings iOS and Android users to create a BBM account using their mobile number. Earlier an email address was required, but now you can use both options. This is also one of the top-requested features, as it speeds up the sign-up process, resetting passwords and finding friends to chat with.

I don't have android or iPhone. Does anyone here know if this is like whatsapp where you can discover or see them if you have their number on your phone book?
