    Hey Super

I am Canadian and bought BlackBerry in canada funs back when dollar was par with usd, or close to it

I too have a gain due to exchange rates, but I have thought about this, and whether I bought in usd or can, I think I would be the same as far as profits or losses, due to the fact that the BlackBerry stock trades in USD and then the Canadian stock reflects the current exchange rate.

Ie, if I bought 1000 shares in USD and 1000 in Can$ at the same time, at the end of the day, if I sold both, I would be about even, since I would take that usd bank roll and convert that to Canadian dollars at the time of sale.

I would really only lose if I held the usd in a usd account and then later converted at a loss if all of a sudden the Canadian dollar spiked

Ps. Anyone else excited for figuring out why SPHS spiked last night?

    Hi farmwesteve !!

You have nailed it, in the end, it doesn't matter what currency you buy the stock in. If you bought when the stock was at par, (see my example) you have paid $ 18.00/US or CDN for a share. Today, you have seen the stock trade at $ 6.70/shr US and $ 9.00/CDN and so the drop in US terms is much larger than the drop in CDN terms and you have still benefited from the purchase at par. At one point this year, the stock was down from $ 18.00/US to $ 6.00/US but in CDN terms it was down from $ 18.00/shr/CDN to $ 9.00/CDN or far less than if you played in US currency alone. In the very short-term, say this year, currency mattered slightly, and in Canada's favour.

As for a take-over of BBRY, not going to happen as Chen sees a minimum of $ 15.00/shr/US and Prem needs that amount to even consider selling out his position. Prem controls enough shares to stop a take-over and everyone knows this hence no offer will ever occur. Once Chen takes back a pile of those Conv. Bonds, the story changes in the Fall. I think the stock will be much higher if Chen can take out a very large portion of those bonds. At that time we will also be seeing new phones and solid revenue numbers versus yoy quarters.

Thanks for the heads up compliment on SPHS, prostrate cancer is big business and this little company has a winner. It would take nothing to buy this company and it is worth at least three times the current price.

    Thanks Morgan for the explanations

I agree about no way for a buyout below $15, I guess in my mind, I was thinking that as a bare minimum, due to Perm having such a high average share.

My thinking was that with these silly overpriced buyouts of whatsapp etc, that some smart large company would offer a $17-$20 price for BlackBerry and work with them in the backend to make it happen and that they would see value in a company like BlackBerry even at that level. I'm not really saying I want that, but I'm more saying that I'm surprised there isn't leaked info of those sort of talks happening.

As for the cherries, we grow very small average, only a couple acres, but they are a BC variety called Summit. We grow them under plastic covered high tunnels to protect them from rain cracking and we use our old icewine netting to net the sides to protect them from the birds. They get nice and sweet and big, because we have limited the number of factors that are beyond our control.

This year is exceptional with the heat, they are going to be amazing!

    Hey,

we have a family farm here in Niagara On The Lake. (https://m.facebook.com/TheFruitShackNOTL )

It's in the tractor where I spend most of my time on crackberry viewing this thread.

I make most of my trades using my BlackBerry Passport while trying not to 'take out' any grapevines on the tractor!

I have my BlackBerry Priv with me too, but have yet to put my sim into it. I Hotspot to it from the passport

It's funny, most complain of lack of apps for BlackBerry, it's too bad that snap has to be sideloaded, because it fulfills most my app needs. Compared to the priv, the same apps actually work just as well on my passport compared to the priv

I still can't believe, with so many parallels that Google hasn't made a run at BlackBerry. The self driving cars, the securing of android, it seems like a match made in heaven. Especially since google could cherry pick all the smooth workings of bb10 and start to implement them to Google.

Anyways enough of me and my BlackBerry addiction

(ps, we don't start selling our own cherries until Sunday, in the meantime we have some local cherries for sale, they are good, but not like Ours!)

BlackBerry Misinformation and the Smartphone Security Crisis
    By Rob Enderle

I’m getting kind of tired of reading that BlackBerry is getting out of the hardware business; BlackBerry isn’t getting out of the hardware business. It stands alone as the only smartphone company exclusively focused on business, security and traditional communication. Until someone else steps up to meet this need, there continues to be a market for its hardware and, as a BlackBerry Priv user myself, I’d hate to see the company go. What caused this latest group of articles was that BlackBerry is discontinuing the Classic phone. But suggesting that it is getting out of the business because it’s eliminating one phone would be like saying Apple is going to discontinue iPhones because it no longer intends to build and sell the iPhone 3. Most consumer-focused companies stop building a model after six to 12 months; business-focused companies have to hang on to designs longer, but you have to admit that the BlackBerry Classic was getting a little long in the tooth.

Let’s talk about why we need a company like BlackBerry to carry the business focus torch.

    Smartphone Malware

The first big reason we need a business/security-focused platform is that there is a ton of malware focused on both iOS and Android platforms. Currently, 10 million, yes that is 10 million, Android phones are compromised by a family of auto-rooting viruses. The worst currently being tracked is called HummingBad. This is a nasty piece of work. It is sourced from a Chinese ad-based company (yep, an actual identified company has produced this nasty beast). Right now, it appears to mostly generate massive ad profits by swiping the revenues that otherwise would flow to other firms.

It is as much an attack on Google as it is an attack on you because, while in does infiltrate command and control servers, it installs promoted apps automatically, defrauds mobile advertisers, and corrupts the statistics inside the Google Play Store. This is generating something like $300,000 a month in revenue for the firm that created it.

This class of product takes control of the phone and copies out the information on it,including pictures. It is not only capable of turning on the cameras and microphones remotely but McAfee demonstrated years ago that it could cause the phones to catastrophically fail by generating excessive heat. We don’t have direct evidence yet of a phone being made to combust but it is theoretically possible and when a phone burns up, it automatically destroys the evidence.

As you’d expect, most of the phones compromised are in China (about 1.6M) but the U.S. count is rising and is already at 286,000. The really scary part is that while it used to be that you’d get one of these things by being tricked into installing it, now it can be placed on the phone by just going to a compromised site. These are mostly porn sites, so an infection on a business phone would lead to a conversation with IT and a manager that I doubt most employees want to have. Even if the phone was infected by another site, you’d never know.

Since this is a rootkit, it survives a factory reset, it has super-user permissions so you can’t get rid of it easily, and it can access sandboxed content. So while this initial instance doesn’t appear to be doing anything particularly bad, this is China we are talking about. What a Chinese firm has, the government has, and it is capable of literally taking over the phone.

The scary stuff doesn’t stop there.

More Smartphone Attacks: Things Are Potentially Much Worse

For some time, we’ve been using phones as a major part of multi-factor authentication, thinking that this was relatively safe. Apparently, it isn’t. In a known exploit, the authentication information sent to the phone was intercepted and sent to the attacker. This comes to us care of Russia.

And hackers have been busy, because now just syncing your smartphone with your PC can compromise the phone’s ability to provide that critical second-factor authentication reliably. Some researchers are now reporting that using a phone as part of a two-factor authentication program simply may not provide the security benefits promised. Even the commonly used “call-back” method of two-factor authentication may now be compromised, according to The Register. It has actually gotten to the point that the banks using smartphones for multi-factor authentication are notifying customers of the problem and providing advice on how to observe and fix it. In fact, the banking industry began reporting the malware problem three years ago.

Wrapping Up: Why We Need BlackBerry’s Business Focus

Consumer phones are simply no longer safe enough for much of what we use them for, and for companies and governments, where the need for security is extremely high, they are not a safe option. As long as that is the case, we need at least one company where security is paramount and with which we can be better assured that these security processes actually work; otherwise, we are likely go back to removing the authorization for smartphones for business use and forcing employees to go back to using flip phones. Hey, if we have to go that way, at least Motorola is ramping the flip phone form factor up. You know, I’m told it is currently the fastest growing phone segment. Go figure.

    Crazy small world.
I have a cousin who works for BlackBerry.
So, he is my hook up for my devices.

He had the z10 before it was released, but wouldn't show it to me because he knew I was a Crackberrian!

He is on the software side in management

If anyone has any questions maybe I can see if he is willing to help us with answers.

He is usually pretty tight lipped about company stuff, can't say I blame him. But you never know.

I guess my loyalty to Canadian BlackBerry is due to the fact that my business relies on loyal Canadians too

I find parallels to farming and BlackBerry hardware.

If farming becomes more difficult in Canada to remain sustainable, and it seizes to exist, then eventually those cheap imports become very expensive and we also lose variety and choice.

It obviously happened with smart phones. With the slow death of bb10 we lose choice of OS and we all know popular isn't always best.

That is the one reason I would like to see a buyout of BlackBerry by a large company that wants to pursue and enhance bb10 to some degree, I feel it might be my only way to ensure I get an android with bb10 combo
