The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that BlackBerry's acquisition of U.K.-based Encription Ltd. and its launch of a new cybersecurity services division make a lot of sense. The Post's Jonathan Ratner writes that the acquisition allows BlackBerry to leverage its core strengths in security and mobile technology, while consulting presents a new business opportunity that could increase BlackBerry's share of corporate IT spending. Since Encription has fewer than 50 employees, the deal is unlikely to have a major impact on BlackBerry any time soon, but TD Securities analyst Daniel Chan noted that BlackBerry's entry into the consulting space allows it to utilize its expertise in some of the highest-growth segments of IT services. Research firm Gartner estimates the global cybersecurity consulting industry is does $16.5-billion worth of business annually -- and growing rapidly. Mr. Chan also pointed out that Encription's customers where BlackBerry is already strong, such as government and financial institutions. In addition to enterprise cybersecurity, BlackBerry is targeting security in the automotive space and other segments of the Internet of Things. BlackBerry closed at $9.84, down 22 cents.

Since Encription has less than 50 employees, the deal is unlikely to have a major impact on BlackBerry anytime soon, but TD Securities analyst Daniel Chan noted the Canadian tech company�s entry into the consulting space allows it to utilize its expertise in some of the highest-growth segments of IT services.

Research firm Gartner estimates the global cybersecurity consulting industry does about US$16.5-billion worth of business annually, with that figure set to grow to US$23 billion in 2019.

Chan also pointed out that Encription�s customers are in verticals where BlackBerry is already strong, such as government and financial institutions.

�If the consulting business is successful, BlackBerry should be able to scale this business by taking it across its global distribution platform and sell consulting services alongside its products,� Chan said in a research note.

BlackBerry Triples Down on Security

I like his wrap up. Let's hope others start taking notice...

This is a big week for mobile announcements because of Mobile World Congress and BlackBerry didn’t disappoint. In the shadow of Apple’s FBI problems, BlackBerry isn’t just doubling down on security it is tripling down. BlackBerry announced three major events: it launched a new cybersecurity service, it increased its alliance to create secure health help to users, and it increased its relationship with Microsoft so that companies could have a secure hosted solution for BES.

Let’s take each in turn.

Cybersecurity Service

If your key differentiator in a market where security is a huge concern is security, why not increase your security footprint to include practices? And that is exactly what BlackBerry is doing, focusing on three IT competency areas and one interesting new one.

Strategic Security: This is long-term, sustainable protection—collecting the best practices in IT operations across enterprise management and cloud services for mobility.

Technical Security: More tactical, this focuses on infrastructure and product development for the client company.

Detection, Testing, and Analysis: This is the big whole I think exists in most companies and even government agencies. They assume their products are keeping them secure but they rarely test to see if their assumptions are correct and generally find—as a result—they aren’t. This service not only tests these assumptions, but when there is a breach can help identify why it occurred, and should be able to help find the person or persons who created the breach.

Automotive and IoT: The automotive technology market is rapidly moving to self-driving cars but has been woefully behind on security. This is true as well with IoT, and that combination—particularly with cars—could be deadly. So BlackBerry is specifically targeting that opportunity to make us safer.

Sharecare BBM

We have a wealth of information on health available to us. Too much actually, and often need professional help when faced with a crisis or concern. But this information and these relationships are, by law, required to be secure and any service with regard to this would need to comply with that security law. So it makes sense for BlackBerry to launch a secure service with Sharecare that could help people with their health questions and concerns. This messaging service works across phone platforms to supply a secure and trusted channel for those needing real time information on their health or the health of loved ones.

BES12 On Azure

One of the things that differentiates BlackBerry is the BES service which gives full control over the phones owned by an organization to that organization but it requires a BES server. As we move increasingly into a cloud world, for smaller organizations putting up their own server is problematic.

Microsoft’s Azure services has grown to be recognized as one of the best solutions for those that can’t or don’t want to bring up their own servers but need the control and want comparable security to that which they would get if they did bring up their own servers. Thus a relationship between BlackBerry and Microsoft to host BES servers on Azure was natural.

Wrapping Up:

I have a feeling that increasingly we will be more focused on the security of our mobile devices than on the consumer-focused functionality because events like what put Apple and the FBI in the news will become even more common. As a result, focusing on security as a primary differentiating capability and one that can be applied to the major platforms should be an increasingly attractive differentiator in the world of device management. A world that is moving from phones to IoT and cars very rapidly. BlackBerry wants to be part of that wave and, I expect, many of us will be safer because it is.

To me at least, earnings will have very little to do with the post Q reaction. I only want to know about the spend for 2016. They borrowed $ 150 MM, they added $ 42 MM more to that and they'll spend it all in 2016 without an explanation. I want to know how they get to those numbers and I'm sure others do too. As for the bottom line, it would be nice to see some more uptake in their royalties and revenues from sales. I will be there listening to the webcast and trying to get as much detail on the spend rate. I firmly believe this is what has caused funds to hold off buying up the stock. This is an exciting time for HALO, this quarter and next so I feel they need to address the budget and that's the issue for everyone.

Happy Friday.. again.. Another solid week in BBRY and the market in general. With BBRY, it bounced around the $7.20 area most of the week until today where it bucked the choppy market and steadily rose to the next level at around $7.50. I have my line at $7.48 but the area is what's most important. The fact that it closed right in there is good and "should" set it up nicely for next week. With the RSI having plenty of room to rise, and the MACD showing bullish sentiment, I'd say busting above the 50-dma and testing the 200-dma next week is definitely a solid possibility. Telecommunications giant snaps up Kidderminster consultancy Encription which provides forensic services, training and certification

Global telecommunications giant BlackBerry has bought out a Worcestershire cyber security specialist.

Kidderminster-based consultancy Encription provides forensic services, training and certification for companies wishing to demonstrate they have implemented security controls to manage their own cyber risk.

BlackBerry said the undisclosed deal was in line with its plans to launch a cyber security services practice which addressed a "massive market for security consulting", estimated to be worth around �11.8 billion.

Writing on the company's blog, chief operating officer Marty Beard said: "We are constantly working to do more for our enterprise customers, especially when it comes to securing their increasingly digital and interconnected mobile world.

"Cyber threats are pervasive in today's increasingly interconnected, mobile and cloud-enabled environment.

"Encription will be an impactful addition to our consulting practice as they bring years of deep experience in cyber security consulting.

"Among other things, Encription specializes in penetration testing - which means they can mimic the techniques of malicious hackers and take those learnings to educate and mitigate the cyber risks posed by criminal hackers."

Brierley Hill-based law firm Higgs & Sons advised Encription's shareholders on the buyout.

Jamie Partington, an associate in the firm's corporate department who specialises in working with tech companies, said: "Everyone has worked really hard over the last couple of months to deliver this project against a tight time-frame and we were delighted to get it over the line for the shareholders.

"Negotiations bridged England, Canada, Dublin and New York - and the successful and swift completion was satisfying for everyone involved."
