Why Android?s $31 Billion in Revenue May Not Be as Big as It Seems - Digits - WSJ

Google rivals, partners, investors and analysts have long wondered how much money the Internet giant makes from Android, the mobile-operating system it gives away for free. A lawyer for Oracle Corp. last week offered some tantalizing clues.

The lawyer told a federal judge Jan. 14 that Android generated $31 billion in revenue and $22 billion in profit, Bloomberg News reported.

Those numbers look big. In fact, they may be small, given Androids reach as the worlds most-popular mobile-operating system.

$31 billion seems smaller than we would have anticipated, said Neil Doshi, an analyst at Mizuho Securities USA Inc. But you can think of this as incremental revenue that Google would have missed out on if they hadnt been early to invest in mobile and pushed the Android ecosystem forward.

For starters, its not clear what the numbers represent. Lawyers for Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., successfully asked a judge to seal the hearing transcript. Oracle, which is suing Google for infringing on its copyright for Java programming technology, declined to comment.

Google acquired Android in 2005 and released the initial mobile-operating system in 2008, but its not clear if the numbers represent total revenue and profit since then.

A person familiar with the matter said Google doesnt account for Android as a stand-alone business. The figures came from internal Google financial documents designated highly confidential, a Google attorney wrote in the request to seal the transcript.

Its also not clear what the Oracle attorney meant by profit. But its conceivable that Google keeps $2 of every $3 in revenue from Android. The Oracle attorney said that Google paid Apple Inc. $1 billion in 2014 to be the default search provider on Apples Safari Web browser on Apple devices. On Android devices, Google doesnt have to make such payments, and so can keep more of its revenue.

Most analysts dont try to estimate Androids revenue and profit because the operating system is free and acts as a hub for delivering Google services like Search and its Play app store, and accompanying ads, to smartphone users.

Google doesnt make a lot of money on Android directly, said Ken Sena, an analyst at Evercore ISI. However, you could do some simple math to show how Android has increased the monetization of other Google services, like search and its app store.

In June, Mizuhos Mr. Doshi estimated Googles 2015 from mobile devices and services would total $31.2 billion. That includes $18.6 billion from mobile search ads, $6.2 billion from mobile display ads and $6.4 billion from Googles 30% share of money spent in the Play store.

Even if half that ad revenue came from non-Android devices, such as Apples iPhone, Mr. Doshi reckons Android could have generated as much as $45 billion in revenue for Google from 2010 through 2015.

The Play store is likely a multi-billion dollar business. Google said in early 2015 that it paid out $7 billion to Google Play game and app developers in 2014, as their 70% share of money spent in the store. That means the Play store, exclusively an Android service, generated total revenue of $10 billion that year.

The Play store is growing fast, and Google keeps a bigger chunk of that remaining 30% these days.

Well. Made my first purchase of 2016 trusting in BlackBerry. Seems like Q3 was missed.

Not sure if the timing was great with the market conditions, but I'm an amateur and just see the market cap as a complete bargain. Just thought I'd share.

Hopefully this will be my long block that I can hold as we keep moving up. Not sure what our next catalyst, BlackBerry specific, would be besides next ER, but giving it a go!

Definitely appreciate this thread. Very informative. GLTA.

Can we please close above $7 at least lol.

Good luck. In some ways we all bought BBRY today because any day you don't decide to sell your holdings, you've basically bought the shares. So we who hold shares are all hoping it will go up significantly from $7. I'm pretty optimistic myself that the company is going to continue to turn around. And make no mistake, I think the turn around has already happened. Too much positive cash flow in the last year or so to have a different view, in my opinion.

I wouldn't read too much into today's action. This week we were below $ 6.40 and we rallied to $ 7.15/shr, there is some profit-taking involved in that. Today we are showing much better signs of working off the access trade, our volume is a fraction of yesterday's and we are looking more like we will close above the 3-ema which is my indicator for a reversal. I see us catching up to the rest of the market soon here and look for a run to about the 50-dma this time around. Sit back and watch the volume, it is showing signs of stabilizing now and drying up as they say. Much to everyone's surprise, the world apparently isn't coming to an end.

Thanks morgan and jon. Appreciate hearing some of the technicals. Just didn't think I'd be able to get in around $7 after ER, but with the markets being a mess... as you wrote BlackBerry was under $6.40.

I just see huge potential and as mentioned a good balance sheet with the turnaround pretty much completed. From this point, I think we need profitability, but I did listen to the last conference call and clearly every quarter is better than the last.

I don't see Chen as a give up type of CEO. He will defend his reputation as a turnaround artist and his plans seem to be coming together well.

Kris... I've looked at all of the stocks on my watchlist up 5-7% and feel your pain. Keeping cash so just was buying one and chose BlackBerry as a stock to hold into the future as it moves up throughout the year.

Wish we had a catalyst to drive the stock price a bit other than the next earnings. I've also felt Chen could do a bit better in defending the stock price. The company is so undervalued, but he's surely working pretty hard to get BlackBerry where they are now.

The momentum as far as perception is at least on our side a bit in my opinion. You don't see BlackBerry on the "companies going out of business this year" lists anymore. I see hardware as a possible lift and Chen cautiously optimistic that they can build phones at a profit fairly soon is encouraging.

Sometimes I think the analysts just want BlackBerry out of hardware and would probably up their targets if exited, but believe Chen is doing the right thing in really trying for the long haul + still accounts for significant portion of revenue.

I expect next Q to be better than Q3 which seems to have been all but forgotten by everyone looking at under $7/share. Pretty much been under since my purchase while others have been up significantly, but believe that the value is very close to being realized here.

Just some of my thoughts on jumping in. Appreciate the feedback. This is a great thread! Time for me to start the BlackBerry cheerleading again. Going to pollute FB with the Priv lol.

Hope we all made the right move in trusting in this company. Again, good luck to everyone :-)

    Hi Slip,

Not me, I have a full position now. I'm watching it today to see how much stock comes out for sale. Someone is supporting it with about 50,000 shares worth of orders to catch it. I would be thrilled if it could hold $ 2.25 as that level is the bottom price level of a weeks worth of trade when the news of the successful Phase III first came out. There must be more holders who would like to break-even on this trade so its surprising that so little is for sale up here. Fantastic volume, the break above the 50-dma is real, solid support, now all we need is positive news. GL

BlackBerry phones made several appearances in Hollywood TV shows and movies in 2015

The Canadian company reported that its phones were spotted multiple times in the hands of numerous celebrities on the big screen in 2015. It said BlackBerry smartphones appeared 199 times on TV shows and movies throughout last year.

The company stated that this saved it the trouble to advertise its phones during ad time.

Been watching this closely, still very little sellers.. I don't have access to L2 right now but someone on stocktwits said only "large" sell order is 98k at $7. I hope news is out next week, I know TA is useless against news but we at the edge of overbought in rsi. You right though I'm loving the volume, someone is accumulating GL!!

Apple's arrival no roadblock for QNX, exec says - Technology - Ottawa Business Journal

With business ramping up, Mr. Poliak said he expects 2016 to be a busy year for QNX, with many announcements about applications for autonomous vehicles.

“The industry is looking for a leader there and we really are it already and we’re just going to keep adding on to that,” he said. “There’ll be a lot of cool things coming out this year.”

It sounds like you were talking about 98,000 shares for sale at $ 7.00? I thought you were talking about buying support below the current price. I happen to like $ 7.00 because I can roll my shares into BBRY! I might need a few cents more as BBRY is starting to wake up now. We have a killer close in this one, a new high and solid volume. Let's see if there is news tonight!?!?!?! GL

Time to short BBRY. No BBOS10 going forward. No support for apps development. Moving into the "me-to" Android market. Enterprise customers will see the end is coming and move away. Might get a short term bump as IT departments order end of life hardware, but then it is a death spiral. Trading at a 3 month low. Short before it goes below $5 and you lose your chance to make money on Chen's stupidity.

None of what you said is a surprise to the market, most stocks are badly beaten up this month and many at far worse than 3 month lows, BB10 is being supported for at least a year as officially announced on the Earnings Call, should they drop hardware, the street would probably reward the stock, and should you decide to short, get brushed up on how to start a go fund me campaign.

What an end to the week. We saw some seriously low prices and panic market wide but gave up some nice trading opportunities. BBRY included. Personally, I'm still not convinced it's over so I have sold all my positions, except BBRY, that I started this week. Can't say no to that kind of profit and I just don't see how oil can be up 9% today, after all the news we got this week about higher than expected reserves by more than 2x, Iran ramping up, the Saudi's saying they're gonna keep on going to get market share.... etc.

None the less, here's the three minute chart for the last 3 days. I see an ascending triangle with $7.05 the line we need to take and hold in order to push on forward. Of course, this goes for many out there as we still seem to be trading of the broad market, but BBRY seems to be a tad more "steady" with a slightly better overall performance. I've overlayed AAPL and the IBB to compare performance after our double bottom on Wednesday morning.

    Happy Friday and Cheers!!

Let me just add the following :

Every time the oil price goes down hard, there's a mechanical raise of the demand. (think "squeeze")
