- After watching the Recode, John Chen video, I am very impressed. I love the strategic thinking and vision he is showing. A lot of people (the masses) don't think critically and analyze situations effectively and they can only see what is right in front of them. This type of thinking is why I enjoyed earning a degree in economics -- most people find it hard to comprehend but the concepts are really quite simple and logical -- if you can analyze and think critically.
The man is not trying to necessarily take share from his competitors, he's trying to enlarge the entire pie, and as a result he will benefit if successful. You can divvy up a small pizza and reallocate the slices, but if you turn that small into a large, everyone can get more.
Instead of just having ultra secure BlackBerry phones, if he can secure the largest phone platform in android, his pie has increased and even modest sales will work wonders for the bottom line. I think a lot of the initiatives he has undergone are all leading us to the point he mentioned -- being cross platform. Why serve a niche market when you can serve the whole market. Every thing from cross platform BBM (which enabled them to become more familiar with other OSes' code), to partnerships w/ Samsung's Knox and acquisitions such as Good (iphone specialists) have enabled BlackBerry to become more device agnostic. Even if the hardware leaves, their serviceable market hasn't decreased from a software perspective -- just throw this secure android on an iteration of a Samsung and every other device manufacturer who has a demand for it and call it a day. Software has higher margins anyway lol.
You have to have foresight to be able to win in business and to be able to see where the market is going, and I think Chen has this-- this applies to real estate flipping (buy early in expanding communities -- years later property values increase, etc), buying under valued stocks, such as BBRY, etc. With IOT, if and when that takes off and things become standardized, if BlackBerry is a key player in that space they will reap incredible rewards by being able to leverage their existing security credentials and the groundwork they are laying now. I think the market is sooooo fixated on handset sales but Chen's visions it's sooooo much more than that as he alluded to. It's about endpoints, not strictly phones....with so many initiatives going I'm confident this company will return to greatness, whether it be phones or other devices and I'm confident the stock price will appreciate and reflect the true value of this company in the years ahead. $100 party anyone? That might actually be setting the bar too low IMHO.
I would love to talk about this more but I typed all this on my Classic keyboard and I have so many thoughts about the future but I won't write an entire dissertation lol...sorry so long! Blame it on my passion!

Posted via CB1010-11-15 03:29 PMLike 0 - I'm no expert on camera use under low light, but following is a recent photo taken with my Passport with the HDR control on, after evening meal in Bruges, Belgium. Full daylight pictures from the Passport continues to amaze me and I will probably get even better pictures as I improve my camera skills from being very amateur..
10-11-15 04:22 PMLike 21 - Low light performance. I've owned 2 BB10 devices(Q5,Q10) and tried both the Passport and the Z10 (with 10.3.1): they all perform bad in low light. I am not the kind of guy who looks for camera performance on its phone but, if "we" wanna be successful in the Android world, they need to offer an awesome camera (hw+sw). The Priv should not be,like the Passport, an excellent smartphone which is adored and praised just on the CB forum. The Priv have to sell quite a lot if we don't wanna see JC forced to close the device division..

The bottom line is that people just need something to bicker about BlackBerry. Perfect example is Re-code interview of JC. It was reported as that like JC just fkd up the entire company in those 10 minutes and people were all over the Internet saying all sort of negative things including firing JC. Just because some bios reporter edited negatively then delayed the actual video purposely, then loaded last year's video with new news and then finally released the right video, only after JC went public and said that's not what he said.
Re-code did the something last year too. Just shameless hatered towards this company. Beyond belief. Enough is enough some times.
Posted via CB1010-11-15 04:44 PMLike 14 - I agree that marketing is important, but I would say that in the case of BB10, it is simply not enough at this point in time. I think convincing the average consumer to give a hi-spec slider with Android a try is such an easier argument to make than convincing them to try a new platform that is missing their desired apps (sideloading doesn't count for the average person). With respect to BB10's future, I just don't think BlackBerry has the desire or conviction to put any significant money into the platform. And I can't blame them. As much as it is the most functional OS in my opinion, there is such little chance of breaking through in any meaningful way right now in the consumer market.

- I have passport and currently I have no issues with it. Dropped many times. No screen lifts (lol) low light or double typing. People talking about no new bb10 devices, I am not sure if my passport need any improvements? People think that if a company doesn't release any "new" devices every 6 months or a year then that OS is dead. I don't think so. How ever, BlackBerry released passport SE not too long ago and has announced 10.3.3 for future 2016 release.

The fact that Re/Code came out with their edited comments then purposely took their time to publish the article with the wrong video (have they done that with any other guest to the Conference, btw? The answer is no. I checked.) and then some more time to publish the right video is not a coincidence, in my opinion. I personally wrote the writer to have her make the appropriate change two days ago...
I have been surveying the media and the harm is done. And that is what they wanted. No one will pick up on the contents of the proper video.
I simply wish JC would be less transparent sometimes and adapt his discourse to the person he is speaking to and his audience. Insofar as am I concerned, Walt Mossberg, Kara Swisher, etc. are not impartial and one should tread very carefully when talking to them. JC deserves respect and much better than having his words taken out of context.
And, even if his words had not been reported out of context, given the general attitude of the media and most people - for that matter - towards an embattled company, I would respectfully suggest he ponder this:
"All things being equal, Abraham Lincoln’s advice that honesty is the best policy is surely true. Yet all things are not always equal, and although outright lies and distortions can rarely be justified, a leader must sometimes massage present circumstances with language intended to shape a more favorable future. Morally and even legally, this may require treading a fine line, yet it is never a good idea to use language that, no matter how truthful, forecloses the future. Sometimes, it is necessary to bend and brighten the truth in order to preserve the possibility that reality may, in good time, be made to coincide with what is at present a description more hopeful than accurate."

Posted via CB1010-11-15 06:37 PMLike 6 - Re putting money into the platform...that's part of my point - they can use the proceeds of the android phone sales to reinvest in BB10 (adapting drivers etc) and in marketing for the phones (both OS), and in volume physical production. I believe they're going down this path anyways, just don't know why no one seems to trust it.

I've been following the Android subreddit, probably far too much I might add; but I guess I just find it interesting to see what people have to say. Anyway, all that to say that there are two BB threads on the first page today. https://www.reddit.com/r/android for those interested. - I wanna close the OT but I would like to clarify my thoughts, because I believe they have been misinterpreted. I have been and I am a BlackBerry loyal fan and supporter since 2009-2010. I am loving their products and liking BlackBerry as a company. The point is that, even if the romantic side of me believes in JC, in BlackBerry, in the '100$ party', I am aware that when it comes to phone manufacturers (and yes, BlackBerry's revenue is still tightened to its devices) what it counts the most is "people's perception". People gotta trust a company to buy its products (or shares ). The problem with BlackBerry is that since 3-4 years a lot of people have changed their thoughts about the company. There are still a lot of people around who believe that BlackBerry "is almost dead, out from the phone market" etc.. if JC is trying to give the handset division a boost with the Priv, he (the company) needs this device to build consesus among everybody. It has to convince retailers, carriers, consumers, "prosumers"..
Imo, consensus is built pursuing two achievements: the first is developing and selling something people can be interested into. Talking devices and Android, people will look essentially to:
- specs
- build quality
- appearance.
The second achievement is market the product highlighting its key strengths:
- specs
- build quality
- bonus (for BlackBerry: BlackBerry experience maybe?)
(appearance is of course subjective).
The point is, if (in the Android sphere) you miss one of these 3 points, there are good chances your product won't sell that well.
Reading that review this morning made me worry: the Priv MAY not have a good camera (hardware and software combo). That will lead to bad reviews and will not facilitate building consensus. No consensus = flop. Flop = abandoning device development.
What makes me sad is that, even if I/WE may like BB10's capabilities in shooting pictures, that's not what people/reviewers are saying. BB10's camera have been polished and refined, but even on the Passport, when it launched, it lacked performance. The time to focus in low light condition is not quick enough to be considered top of the line on the Internet. My thought has been: if they didn't succeed in "fixing"/adjusting that in their OS, are there any chances they will adjust the software on the Priv?
Pardon my english and the long post. I hope I've clarified my "vision". All the best and LongLiveBlackBerry! =)

Posted via CB1010-11-15 08:32 PMLike 9 - Not sure how long you have been following BlackBerry.. but if you have been sitting through BB7, BB10 and now the Priv like most of the BlackBerry employees and shareholders (!), then I think you might pull the plug on their hardware division too if they can't sell 5 million devices in a target market of over 1 billion devices that Android currently represents. Sure, they will market the device with help of the carriers, but not a buck more. Frank Boulben perhaps could have spent his marketing budget more wisely during the BB10 launch days, but every resource spent on the hardware division nowadays means a resource lost for their software division. I say go software, it's where they still make a difference.
