Things are about to get very interesting in a nascent technology that the CEO of Cisco said has the potential to be a US$19 trillion market. Unless you are a technophile, you may not have seen much about it, but it�s coming. The technology is called the Internet of Things (IoT). As its name implies, all sorts of �things� will be connecting to the Internet.

But what is a �thing?�

A thing is anything that doesn�t currently connect to the Internet. Your refrigerator is a thing that could connect. A blood pressure, pulse, and temperature machine is a thing that could connect, transmitting that data back to your doctor. Your car could connect to the Internet so that you could communicate to other connected devices in your house. Whereas in the past, your things were isolated, the IoT would connect everything together so it could all communicate.

The two companies that I have my eyes on in this sector are Sierra Wireless Inc. (TSX:SW)(NASDAQ:SWIR) and BlackBerry Ltd. (TSX:BB)(NASDAQ:BBRY). But if you had to choose, which would you buy?

Sierra Wireless

Some analysts have called Sierra the King of IoT. What the company is attempting to do is create the nervous system of the IoT. In essence, how do two different devices talk to each other? If we look at the acquisitions that the company has made over the previous years, it is clear that the only focus that Sierra has is on the IoT.

Some of the products that Sierra Wireless has includes wireless modules, modems, gateways, and cloud services. This portfolio of products and services will enable many different items to connect to the Internet with relative ease.

What�s best for potential investors is that the stock has plummeted from its year high. Buying shares of the stock at this price would definitely be a smart move, especially if IoT does take off.

BlackBerry

BlackBerry has been through an inferno and is attempting to come back. I have proposed that the company stop making hardware and it appears to be focusing more on software. The one market that BlackBerry thinks it can dominate is security. We have already seen companies like Ford ditching other companies for BlackBerry�s QNX operating system.

In essence, BlackBerry doesn�t want to control the entire market. Instead, it wants to be the brains of the operation. So long as BlackBerry keeps its reputation for security, I see this company having a very bright future in the market.

Which should you buy?

I am a proponent of owning both stocks. If you want to add a few tech stocks to your portfolio, they are both interesting investments. The reality, though, is that they are risky. If the IoT fails, these stocks could also fail miserably. Fortunately, the price of both companies is attractive and I don�t see the IoT disappearing. Therefore, buying both stocks would definitely be a smart move. The risk is there, but the reward is also there.

BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY) shares are expected to touch $9.54 in the short term. This short term price target has been shared by 19 analysts. However, the standard deviation of short term price estimate has been valued at 2.11. The target price could hit $14 on the higher end and $6 on the lower end.

Many analysts have commented on the company rating. Morgan Stanley upgrades its view on BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY) according to the research report released by the firm to its investors. The shares have now been rated Equal-weight by the stock experts at the ratings house. Earlier, the shares had a rating of Underweight . Morgan Stanley maintains the current price target of $7 per share on BlackBerry Limited. The rating by the firm was issued on July 28, 2015.

Analysts at Zacks have given a short term rating of hold on BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY) with a rank of 3. The company has received an average rating of 2.86 from 22 brokerage firms. 3 analysts have rated the company as a strong buy. The company has been rated as hold from 15 Wall Street Analysts. 1 analysts have suggested buy for the shares. 1 analyst has also rated it as a strong sell. A sell call was given by 2 analyst.

Wall Street Equity Research analysts evaluating future earnings growth for BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY), are predicting that the company will report $-0.02 for the quarter ending on 2015-08-31. This number is on a consensus basis of the brokerage firms issuing projections on the firm.

In analyzing the analyst�s long-term earnings per share estimate trends, analysts have a mean estimate for long-term growth of $12.5. This is the best estimate for both earnings and sales over the next three to five years. Three months ago, analysts had the same long-term growth estimate at $12.5, on a consensus level.

There are 19 sell-side analysts covering BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY) which have issued a projected price level of where they expect the stock to reach over the next 52-weeks. The consensus price point of these analysts currently stands at $9.539. The brokerage firm seeing the most upside to current levels sees the equity reaching $14, while the most conservative analyst projection sees the stock at $6 over that same time frame.

When breaking down the analyst ratings into a simplified formula where one represents a Strong Buy and five represents a Strong Sell recommendation, BlackBerry Limited has a rating of 2.86 based on the reports from the 19 firms issuing ratings.

Remember that video we shared a few days ago of BlackBerry security experts showing how easy it was to hack a smart*infusion pump? Two things about that: We were right that it was a*LifeCare PCA*pump from Hospira; and we figured it would not be long until Hospira*defended its product.

Hospira, a Lake Forest, Ill.-based company that makes infusion systems and injectable drugs, sent MedCity News*a statement that*addresses the specific video and our story.

In the video, filmed during a live demonstration on stage at the recent BlackBerry Security Summit 2015*in New York, BlackBerry�s Graham Murphy physically connected a laptop to the pump�s Ethernet port, then took control of the medical device.

He then did the same via Wi-Fi. In both cases, he relied on the fact that the*FCC ID on the pump helped Murphy identify the specific,*fixed IP address associated with the product. But*Hospira said*BlackBerry*also did something the audience did not see.

�Part of our investigation into the LifeCare PCA infusion pump demonstration included a conversation with one of the �hackers� who admitted that they manipulated the firmware on the device by having physical access to it prior to their demonstration of the hack. This was not a remote or wireless �hack� as the video implied and physical access to the device would be required to alter the settings as shown in the video,� the Hospira statement said.

As for the modifications Murphy made to the pump�s firmware while he*was on camera, Hospira noted that hospitals likely would have better security than Murphy was dealing with.

�For a hacker to successfully attack an infusion pump, they would likely need to remove the device from the clinical environment, modify the pump and return the device to a clinical setting,� the statement said.

�These demonstrated hacks were done in non-clinical environments without the security protections and protocols typical of real patient care settings. For patient use, these devices are connected to hospital networks and any attempts to remotely attack an infusion device would require penetration of several layers of network security enforce by the hospital, including firewalls. These measures serve as the primary defense against tampering with a medical device.�

At least let�s hope every hospital that uses one of these pumps has better security. If not, you probably should avoid treatment there just to be safe, and the CIO should be fired. Just sayin�.

Without seeing Hospira's full response, the quotes in the blog/article seem to be a diversionary tactic on Hospira's part. Focus on the "prior physical access" and "wireless hack" part and not the fact they didn't have a login/password or whatever the main deficiency was.

I also sure hope Hospira didn't use QNX for their machines because somehow I don't think they'll be favoring BlackBerry or her products/services in the future. I don't think they appreciated being outed like that in public, especially with the regulatory advisories that followed. Doesn't matter that BlackBerry's Murphy said, during the live demo, that the vulnerabilities were previously documented/exposed by others, and BlackBerry didn't introduce anything new.

You could very well be right about them considering BB services. Hurt feelings and all that goes with it. Sacrifice one, gain far more who don't want to be BlackBerrys next security hack victim, i mean, demonstration.

BlackBerry said no bc the price wasn't right. Like Chen said, he won't sell until fair value is achieved. If and when Samsung decides they truly want to enter pkb market, they will pay the true price.

Especially if the rumors are true regarding a BlackBerry Android device, I'd expect that to peak Samsungs interest even more. They need some way to clearly differentiate themselves from the Android crowd. Android is like a race to the bottom. If BlackBerry can successfully garner the attention of consumers with a unique, secure and productive android device, w/o having to sacrifice the consumer side of the equation (apps, media consumption, etc), I'd fully expect a bidding war to ensue if BlackBerry has a hit on their hands....or perhaps BlackBerry could go it alone and create even more shareholder value -- no need to sell when you're in the drivers seat
