The name BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) resonates with investors as the company who lead the cell phone revolution, only to be eventually trumped by Apple as they dragged their heels when innovative 'smart phone' technologies came to the market. This is a monkey that might actually always be on the back of BlackBerry, even as they continue to pursue extremely lucrative business opportunities.

With that said, we do not expect nor do we suggest that BlackBerry change its name or re-brand itself. In fact, we believe that relationship will only solidify the future business of the company as they pursue security in the iOT space. It is our opinion that BlackBerry is in the right place at the right time, again.

We know they were ahead of the curve with cell phones, and we currently believe they are ahead of the curve with security as well.

Vulnerability threats now expand much further than cell phone hacking. BlackBerry already offers the most secure cell phone network, that is why Governments use BlackBerry, and interestingly it is this security and the inability to hack into it and read texts and emails that caused Pakistan, a country where the business of hacking might actually be a viable one, to disallow BlackBerry devices. Pakistan could not hack Blackberry's, so instead they are not allowing them in the country anymore.

However, you would never know BlackBerry had the best security if you walked into a Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) Store; BlackBerry is not advertising their competitive advantage very well at all. I am not sure if this is part of John Chen's plan, but why would it be?

The more important question might actually be how much could BlackBerry phone sales improve if they did? Given all of the public security risks in 'smart autos,' namely the recent Fiat and Chrysler Hacking and the Harmon Kardon issues, but in addition the hacking into a Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) that will be officially disclosed on Friday, intelligent shoppers might embrace the option of heightened security.

I know if I walked into a store and learn that 'this phone was much more secure than others' it would make a material difference in my decision making. The general public doesn't know this. All they know is that BlackBerry was popular and now Apple rules.

In addition, I might add, an excellent way to reach added small businesses and even potential enterprise customers is to use that platform as a launch point for the suite of security products offered by BlackBerry. There is more staying power in security than in technology fads that draw the attention of younger consumers, not to say that those technologies will be neglected, but no one has the suite of security products that BlackBerry has, and if a consumer was properly educated he would learn that by being part of BlackBerry he is not only securing his phone, but he is part of a much larger security infrastructure that spans the IOT space.

In our opinion, it is all about marketing now.

BlackBerry is ahead of the curve, and they have one of the most robust marketing channels imaginable. All they need to do is make the public (consumers and businesses) aware and they will flourish. It is marketing 101, and if done properly BackBerry will once again be a $100B company. They are in the right place at the right time, again...

Limiting Smart Phone production to 1-2 per year is probably a good idea, but exiting the business would be foolish. The cell phone business is an exceptional marketing channel.

After attending the Innovation Tri-Valley Leadership Group's seventh annual Software Stars at Casa Real, I have a new opinion of Blackberry.

I had figured that the smart phones would spell the end of the company that a software executive once described to me as a "killer app." In 2010, Blackberry had 43 percent of the smart phone market, but, thanks to the popularity of the Apple IPhone and devices by Samsung and other manufacturers, its consumer market share has shrunk to 1.5 percent.

But, according to Marty Beard, the Chief Operating Officer, there is a critical niche that Blackberry is exploiting�secure communications. He told the crowd that all of the G20 countries use Blackberry phones because of its security is the gold standard for wireless devices. Working out of the West Coast headquarters in Pleasanton, Beard said the turn-around has resulted in the company sitting on $3 billion in cash. John Chen, CEO of Sybase in Dublin when it was purchased by SAP, has served as CEO of Blackberry since November 2013.

The firm demonstrated in New York earlier last week just how critical wireless security can be. One of its "white hat hackers" was asked to crack a wirelessly controlled infusion pump controlling medication to a dummy in a hospital. After three minutes, he was able to quadruple the medication and "kill" the patient.

On that same panel, Dr. Rahul Parikh of the Permanente Medical Group (the physicians serving the Kaiser system) described how he and his colleagues are pushing innovation in the integrated medical system. He posed a key question that each of us should ask and answer: how much health data do we want available to outside providers?

The new wearable technologies can monitor health status and activity levels remotely. Do you want your insurance company knowing if you exercised today? Excellent points to ponder.

Brad Surak, General Manager of Industrial Internet Applications for GE Software (headquartered in Bishop Ranch in San Ramon) noted that CEO Jeff Immelt told Charlie Rose that he went to bed one night running an industrial manufacturing firm and woke up the next morning in charge of a software company. Incidentally, the GE facility in San Ramon has grown from 400 employees to 1,200 in just four years.
The Internet of interconnected devices for consumers or of major industrial equipment in GE's case (digitizing the physical world) touches all of us. Surak pointed out that 80 percent of GE's revenue comes from servicing what it sells.

And Ray O'Connor, CEO of Livermore-based Topcon, told of remotely monitoring a giant dirt scraper in New York from an office in San Francisco. Topcon makes the GPS-controllers for all forms of equipment.

The first panel featured managers from Sandia and Lawrence Livermore labs as well as Rob Sadow, the founder of start-up Scoop that is using its mobile app to help encourage ridesharing for commuters.

The national lab folks celebrated that recent White House initiative that spelled out the importance of U.S. leadership in high-speed computing. For decades, Lawrence Livermore, working with industrial partners, has utilized the most capable high-speed computers in the world, but the Chinese have greatly improved their capabilities.

The computers are used for modeling simulations of nuclear explosions as well as other very complex problems.

The computing power, coupled with the lab's ability to bring experienced scientists and engineers from various disciplines together to work on big challenges, continue to help advance the national interests. For instance, they now can model a human heart, in real time, down to the chemical reactions at the molecular level.

The users not only found the Android-iOS 9 completely different and easier to use, but also applauded the finer elements like the ability to control music while browsing the web through shaking the device. Once this happens, it wouldn�t be entirely unthinkable for Samsung and LG to start losing their grip over US-based Android smartphone sales.

A class-action lawsuit would open the case to anyone who had been impacted by the claim, potentially causing Apple to pay a hefty settlement or face expensive legal fees to defend the case.

The numbers are finally out and once again, Apple�s iPhone was declared the victor edging its rivals Android, Windows, and Blackberry, with a huge gap.

Apple�s iMessage text messaging feature allows iOS users to text other iOS users without eating up their data allowance. The �intercepted� messages are held indefinitely, the suit claims, and that allegedly counts as �unauthorized access� to a computer system and a violation of both the Stored Communications Act and the Federal Wire Tap Act. So what does happen when you slap Android on a smartphone that looks incredibly like and iPhone 6 or 6s and sell it off as the next iOS 9?

Of course, not everyone they asked was into technology, so inevitably they blindly believed that the iPhone was indeed running on iOS 9.

Apple has argued that the lawsuits should be thrown out. Yes, they do. No, we are not kidding.

Speaking to Business Insider, Spoor said it took �a lot of hacking� to make their phone appear to run Android. The only part we don�t know is what apps Apple might bring over to Google�s platform. Apple didn�t immediately reply to a request for comment.

However, one filing in the case requests that certain internal emails remain confidential, including one addressed to CEO Tim Cook on April 28, 2013. It would be quite an achievement if these guys had managed it, but from the quick flashes of the screen you see in the video it�s clear that they have not.

You may have started taking extra steps to protect your privacy online in the post-Snowden era. But there�s a component in your phone that advertisers might be abusing right now to track you online despite your best efforts: its battery.

It turns out that your battery can be leveraged to fingerprint your device with amazing precision, and it can be done silently without your permission. How is that possible? Because the W3C implemented a new specification that allows websites to check power stats, the Battery Status API.

A group of French and Belgian researchers have just published a paper that details how the battery in a device with a W3C-compliant browser � in this case Firefox running on Linux � can be exploited to identify its user.

The revelation that a device�s battery status can be misused in this way isn�t a new one. Back in February of this year, Yan Michalevski and a group of researchers from Stanford made the same discovery. Michalevski reported that �measuring the phone�s aggregate power consumption over time completely reveals the phone�s location and movement.�

For the advertisers looking to identify you so they can target ads, this is a beautiful thing. It doesn�t make a difference whether your smartphone runs iOS, Android, Windows Phone, or even BlackBerry or Firefox OS. It doesn�t matter if you have location services disabled. If you have a battery in your device and use a standards-compliant browser, you�re at risk.

The most worrisome part about both of these reports is that battery-based tracking can keep tabs on you in spite of other precautions you might be taking. Browsing in private mode? By identifying your battery before and after, advertisers can simply replace the cookie that disappears when you end your private session.

There are a couple of easy fixes suggested in the European team�s paper. One, the level of precision that the Battery Status API is allowed to report could be limited. Another is that browsers prompt users for permission when a site wants to tap the API.

Hopefully one or both of those suggestions is implemented soon. If not, at least the EFF is working on a new and improved Do Not Track for us.

QNX in the upcoming Volvo Models Down Under

New to the XC90 is its infotainment system. It centres around a 9-inch touch screen, operates on the QNX operating system and uses HERE maps for its GPS navigation.

The entire system has been designed to present drivers only information that is contextually relevant. Pertinent information is pushed to the top of the touchscreen so that it can be seen at a glance, while less critical information is shifted towards the bottom of the screen, where it is easier to reach.

An infrared layer cast above the screen is used so that people can operate the system while wearing gloves.

The QNX operating system is a subsidiary of BlackBerry and, therefore, is fluent in the kind of gestures common to smartphones. It is based on three easy-to-use panels.

Two variants of the XC90 will go on sale in Australia on 8 August. The D5 diesel and the T6 Petrol, while the T8 hybrid is scheduled for release in February 2016.

After attending the Innovation Tri-Valley Leadership Group's seventh annual Software Stars at Casa Real, I have a new opinion of Blackberry.

I had figured that the smart phones would spell the end of the company that a software executive once described to me as a "killer app." In 2010, Blackberry had 43 percent of the smart phone market, but, thanks to the popularity of the Apple IPhone and devices by Samsung and other manufacturers, its consumer market share has shrunk to 1.5 percent.

But, according to Marty Beard, the Chief Operating Officer, there is a critical niche that Blackberry is exploiting—secure communications. He told the crowd that all of the G20 countries use Blackberry phones because of its security is the gold standard for wireless devices. Working out of the West Coast headquarters in Pleasanton, Beard said the turn-around has resulted in the company sitting on $3 billion in cash. John Chen, CEO of Sybase in Dublin when it was purchased by SAP, has served as CEO of Blackberry since November 2013.

The firm demonstrated in New York earlier last week just how critical wireless security can be. One of its "white hat hackers" was asked to crack a wirelessly controlled infusion pump controlling medication to a dummy in a hospital. After three minutes, he was able to quadruple the medication and "kill" the patient.

On that same panel, Dr. Rahul Parikh of the Permanente Medical Group (the physicians serving the Kaiser system) described how he and his colleagues are pushing innovation in the integrated medical system. He posed a key question that each of us should ask and answer: how much health data do we want available to outside providers?

The new wearable technologies can monitor health status and activity levels remotely. Do you want your insurance company knowing if you exercised today? Excellent points to ponder.

Brad Surak, General Manager of Industrial Internet Applications for GE Software (headquartered in Bishop Ranch in San Ramon) noted that CEO Jeff Immelt told Charlie Rose that he went to bed one night running an industrial manufacturing firm and woke up the next morning in charge of a software company. Incidentally, the GE facility in San Ramon has grown from 400 employees to 1,200 in just four years.

The Internet of interconnected devices for consumers or of major industrial equipment in GE's case (digitizing the physical world) touches all of us. Surak pointed out that 80 percent of GE's revenue comes from servicing what it sells.

And Ray O'Connor, CEO of Livermore-based Topcon, told of remotely monitoring a giant dirt scraper in New York from an office in San Francisco. Topcon makes the GPS-controllers for all forms of equipment.

The first panel featured managers from Sandia and Lawrence Livermore labs as well as Rob Sadow, the founder of start-up Scoop that is using its mobile app to help encourage ridesharing for commuters.

The national lab folks celebrated that recent White House initiative that spelled out the importance of U.S. leadership in high-speed computing. For decades, Lawrence Livermore, working with industrial partners, has utilized the most capable high-speed computers in the world, but the Chinese have greatly improved their capabilities.

The computers are used for modeling simulations of nuclear explosions as well as other very complex problems.

The computing power, coupled with the lab's ability to bring experienced scientists and engineers from various disciplines together to work on big challenges, continue to help advance the national interests. For instance, they now can model a human heart, in real time, down to the chemical reactions at the molecular level.

The major caveat here, and this may point to a future BlackBerry acquisition, is that BlackBerry currently has no footprint on the desktop. Virtually all the recent data leaks have been from desktop/laptop or server penetrations or lost unencrypted harddrives. We're still probably a few years away from phones/tablets overtaking laptops and PCs.

In terms of total traffic we are a few years from phones/tablets over taking PCs, but in terms of how many times per day you check in on that device, we've passed the point where folks interact more often on their phone or tablet than on their PCs.
