One sleeper comment made earlier in the summit was the fact that BlackBerry devices were cleared to hold secret level data on the battlefield. I wonder what is happening with the Android-on-the battlefied devices the Army has been piloting? Hopefully being replaced with BlackBerry's.

Intel and QNX Software Systems talk connected cars

How many collaborations in embedded have lasted more than three decades? Our relationship with Intel comes immediately to mind.

I�m told it all began in 1981, when the first IBM PCs ran the Intel 8088 microprocessor and were updateable from DOS to the QNX operating system. A quick trip to your local Sears, ComputerLand or IBM Product Center, followed by a call with QNX support, and the most reliable computer the market could offer was all yours.

Fast forward 34 years, and QNX and Intel are still changing the technology landscape. Earlier this summer, Intel announced their plans to work with us on technologies for a variety of connected car applications, including infotainment systems, digital instrument clusters and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Right around that same time, our Andrew Poliak, global director of business development, met up with Ken Obuszewski, director of automotive marketing for Intel, at TU-Automotive Detroit, where they spoke on camera with Bill Hampton from The AutoBeat Group. The topic was, of course, the connected car, and both gentlemen made compelling comments about the future of this exciting aspect of automotive and our mutual plans to deliver:

Would it have killed Chen to have mentioned BlackBerry Balance, music, video, iTunes compatibility, even web browser apps, when asked if BlackBerry was working on helping people reduce the number of phones they carry? In this case, iPhone and BlackBerry Classics?

BlackBerry is going to reduce the number of devices introduced each year? Seems like four is the minimum to keep "everyone" happy on the high/low ends of PKB and VKB device preferences. Guess we'll see.

I laughed! But then thought, wow....this is still an issue...and kinda upsetting to still be talking about this.

Why BlackBerry Ltd. Should Sell Itself to Samsung for $19 per Share

BlackBerry Ltd. (TSX:BB)(Nasdaq:BBRY) is undeniably one of Canada�s most polarizing stocks.

Supporters of the company point to its renewed focus on software and its stronger balance sheet. They note how far the company has come under new CEO John Chen, even while the stock price is back where it started.

Detractors have a point too. They point to the declining handset sales and service revenue. Even worse, the mobile device management (MDM) market has become far more competitive in the last year. Profitability remains practically nonexistent. And if that wasn�t bad enough, BlackBerry�s brand seems to be holding back the company.

The fact is, it�s impossible to know how successful Mr. Chen�s efforts will be. We also have no idea which way BlackBerry�s stock price will go. But here�s one thing we can be pretty sure of: Samsung offered US$7.5 billion for BlackBerry back in January. In Canadian dollar terms, that works out to $19 per share.

According to a report by Reuters, BlackBerry rejected the offer, claiming it grossly undervalued the company. But it may be time to revisit the idea. Below we take a closer look.

Why BlackBerry is better off in someone else�s hands

As we all know by now, BlackBerry is shifting its focus from handsets to software. Unfortunately the company�s sagging handset business seems to be holding back software sales. The reason is simple: enterprise customers are reluctant to buy software from a company they see as in decline. Put simply, BlackBerry�s battered brand is hurting software sales.

Mr. Chen seemed to acknowledge this in May while speaking in Kitchener, Ontario. As he put it, �Not long ago, the company was in deep deep trouble. We are now out of trouble in terms of financial, but we haven�t established a growth� until that happens nobody will go willingly buy our products.�

If BlackBerry were in another company�s hands, such as Samsung, it would no longer suffer from that problem.

Samsung is still a great candidate

Samsung is especially suitable for BlackBerry. The company has struggled to gain traction in the enterprise market, which is of course BlackBerry�s bread and butter. Better yet, Samsung could make great use of BlackBerry�s 44,000 patents as it fights Apple in the courts.

In any case, it�s hard to imagine BlackBerry being worth more than what Samsung was willing to pay.

Don�t hold your breath

Even though an acquisition makes perfect sense, don�t expect it to happen anytime soon. Mr. Chen and the rest of BlackBerry�s board are determined to continue the turnaround effort for the time being, and probably won�t give up for quite some time.

But eventually, BlackBerry will likely have to be sold, whether the turnaround is successful or not. This is worth keeping an eye on.

BlackBerry is still a roll of the dice. This is a better option.

Blackberry delves deeper into security with AtHoc purchase

BlackBerry continues to shift its focus from selling mobile phones to securing them�as well as other portable devices, and increasingly connected items that are part of the Internet of things.

These talks will help you reshape how you approach work and see your career in a new light.

�All of our investments and acquisitions go to one thing, to make the most secure mobile platform that the industry has to offer,� said John Chen, BlackBerry executive chairman and CEO, kicking off a morning of presentations at the company-sponsored BlackBerry Security Summit, held Thursday in New York.

BlackBerry still sells handsets, but, to judge from the day�s presentations, it clearly sees a brighter future now in enterprise mobile security, where it can best leverage its remaining strengths in the market.

On Wednesday, the company announced it is planning to purchase the Waterloo, Ontario-based AtHoc, which provides a software platform for sending out alert messages to smart phones and other digital devices.

BlackBerry�s AtHoc purchase�financial terms were undisclosed�is one of a number of the company has made in the last year to bulk up its security-related software and services. Last year, it purchased SecuSmart, which offered services to encrypt telephone messages.

In April, BlackBerry purchased WatchDox, which offered software to securely share documents across multiple devices.

Thus far, AtHoc has found considerable success in the U.S. market. Its alerts can reach over three million U.S. government personnel, chiefly in the Defense Department and Department of Homeland Security.

BlackBerry plans to roll the AtHoc technology into its own global BlackBerry Messaging service (BBN), offering its customers the capabilities worldwide, said Marty Beard, BlackBerry chief operating officer. Thus far, AtHoc�s own coverage been largely limited to the U.S.

The AtHoc technology could be used to send out alerts about extreme weather conditions, potentially disruptive events or other vital information. The U.S. Transportation Security Agency uses the technology in airports, for instance, to notify TSA officers when a person of suspicious intent has been identified.

Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, BlackBerry has lost a considerable chunk of the handset market, as more feature-friendly Android devices and iPhones caught the attention of consumers and business.

When Chen took the helm in November 2013, he focused on the company�s strong expertise in securing phones, a by-product of BlackBerry�s aggressive pursuit of the government market as well as the market for businesses that require highly secure communications.

The company has since extended BBN to support Android, iOS and mobile Windows devices as well, freeing potential customers from purchasing BlackBerry gear and offering a single platform to manage the security of multiple devices.

The company also plans to move into the rapidly growing Internet of things market, an area that is in dire need of security, said David Kleidermacher, BlackBerry chief security officer, during his presentation.

For the summit, the company demonstrated how easy it is to hack into an infusion pump, a medical device that can deliver morphine or other medications to an ailing patient.

On stage, BlackBerry researcher Graham Murphy walked through the process of gaining entry to the pump, which had an ethernet port and an onboard computer. Using the device�s default password, easily discoverable on the Internet, he was able to break into the machine and upload a program that could override the existing software.

The market for machine-to-machine technologies and services will top $4.3 trillion by 2024, the company estimated.

�As connectivity increases, the needs for security and privacy exponentially increase,� Beard said. �As we get into the Internet of things, the real value will come from the data connectivity and the application connectivity.�
