The IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV) study on Mobility Impact notes that 63 percent of public sector respondents would appreciate mobile access to their specialized applications like budget and controlling. These data are subject to special security requirements. Access via conventional mobile devices is ruled out.

(Bloomberg) -- BlackBerry Ltd. introduced a tablet computer aimed at government and corporate customers that it says can let users access consumer applications such as YouTube and WhatsApp while keeping confidential work-related information away from spies and crooks.

The SecuTABLET, shown at the CeBIT conference in Hanover, Germany, is based on Samsung Electronics Co.’s Tab S 10.5 and uses International Business Machines Corp. software to wrap applications that hold secrets into a virtual container where they can’t be harmed by malware. Germany’s computer-security watchdog is certifying the device for classified government communication, BlackBerry’s Secusmart unit said on Saturday.

BlackBerry acquired Secusmart last year in an effort to win more business from customers demanding rigorous data security. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company, which sold few of its own 2011 Playbook tablets, is shifting from making hardware to building security components and software into competitors’ devices as the frequency of cyber attacks mounts.

The tablet integrates BlackBerry’s technology with one of its main competitors in the mobile-device market. When IBM and Apple Inc. signed a deal to collaborate on mobile business applications last July, BlackBerry’s stock dropped 12 percent.

“We do recognize that people actually have a personal life and a business life,” said Lee Epting, head of Samsung’s European corporate-customer business. “We need to be able to easily transfer between those two worlds.”

Work and Personal

The tension between maintaining personal privacy while still letting employers secure phones has been in the spotlight recently with former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a single device and a home-based server for both her government work and private communications.

A poll by IBM showed that 63 percent of all officials need access to specific software such as for finances and controlling on their mobile devices. However, many government officials and executives have resisted the use of so-called crypto phones as they tend to limit what users can do with them.

For instance, making a secure call requires both sides to have the necessary technology installed, and many programs aren’t allowed to run on them because they may pose a point of entry for viruses or snooping software. The devices also tend to be more expensive than off-the-shelf phones.

Secusmart tries to make its devices safe and useful at the same time by installing a small chipcard, which encrypts voice and data and cannot be corrupted by malware targeting the operating system. The company has shipped BlackBerry 10 devices modified in such a way to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and members of her government.

Closing Gap

Samsung has begun emphasizing its enterprise products as it lost its lead in the smartphone market to Apple in the fourth quarter. Its Galaxy S6 phone will ship with the Knox software, which combines improved user authentication and encryption to protect the device from attacks.

“Together with IBM and Samsung, we’re closing the remaining gap” in Germany’s security network, Secusmart Chief Executive Officer Hans-Christoph Quelle said in a statement. “German federal authorities will have the most modern and most secure communications network in the world.”

As previously reported, Secusmart, IBM and Samsung have entered into a new joint venture. The companies want to equip the federal government with secured tablets. Name: SecuTABLET.

Afirst model based on Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.5 S will be shown at CeBIT, in Hanover, said Secusmart CEO Hans-Christoph Quelle to the German Press Agency. The marketing should begin in the summer. The necessary VS-NfD (classified – for official use only) approval by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) should be available by year-end, he said.

Secusmart delivers the tablet’s data transfer infrastructure as well as the crypto software. Samsung combines the hardware (S Galaxy Tab 10.5) with Knox. IBM offers a technology for the protection of the individual apps and will undertake the marketing abroad.

The tablets are available to the Federal Government under the current contract, under which smartphones are already delivered. The agreement provides for the supply of a total of 10,000 units.

TORONTO—BlackBerry Ltd. unveiled a new high-security tablet on Saturday as part of its continuing efforts to expand its base with business and government customers.

The new device, developed with Samsung Electronics Co. and International Business Machines Corp., marks the second time BlackBerry has tried to enter the tablet market. The company said it should be available as early as this summer.

In 2011 BlackBerry introduced the PlayBook tablet as part of the previous management’s attempt to compete with Apple Inc., Samsung and others in the consumer market. The PlayBook stumbled out of the gate, criticized as lacking core features, and the Canadian company ended up writing down hundreds of millions of dollars in unsold inventory.

BlackBerry commands little of the global mobile-device market, but businesses still consider it the gold standard of mobile security, a feature governments place a priority on to guard against hackers as they conduct more business over wireless networks.

BlackBerry’s Secusmart unit developed the new SecuTablet, based on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S 10.5. It incorporates Secusmart’s encryption technology, which is already used by the German and Canadian governments, among others, to counter eavesdropping. IBM technology allows the tablet to securely separate work applications from personal ones on the device.

I think "based on the Galaxy Tab S 10.5" sort of implies Android. If it was BB10, IBM would have to rebuild a lot of apps. Plus the mention of having YouTube, Netflix, etc.

True for existing Apple devices.

Though I wouldn't put it past Apple to design, build, manufacture their own secure chips. They have lot of expertise in cpu design and manufacturing. If they decide to manufacture chip-level secure devices, I think they'll simply design and manufacture their own chips.

Yeah, in the current "Apple-can-do-no-wrong" environment, if Apple developed their own security chip, western tech blogs/pundits, Wall Street analysts, and therefore the unthinking masses, would all proclaim that Apple would be the new gold standard for security. Wouldn't matter if it worked or not or how big any discovered security holes are. Let's hope Apple starts to lose its shine after it joins the Dow next week and after it launches the Apple Watch.

If it is then Samsung is licensing??.

I would guess no. They mentioned Knox, Android is more prolific, and I would think that a BB10 OS would have at least a QNX tag line somewhere in the many articles referencing the OS as well. It's a pretty big omission from the story for it to be BB10.
Hope I'm wrong though!

I read somewhere the tablet cost $2300 with the special BBRY security sauce. The run of the mill tablet cost $500 so there is an $1800 piece of the pie that would be shared. My wild guess is between 1K up to $1200.

For comparison the Z10 with the same Secusmart card tech was sold for $2700 in 2013. I'm guessing the plain vanilla Z10 was selling for $700 at the time.

So, after all this news on the new partnership, anyone want to guess how it will affect BlackBerry stock price monday?

But, my guess is minimal, I suppose it has been said here many times, that the stock price won't go up until BlackBerry shows some good numbers, products and services announcements won't help until they prove it.

I know that with my heart, but my head is friggin impatient!
