    Interview with BlackBerry’s SecuSmart Founders

During the Mobile World Congress 2015 event, which was held in Barcelona, Spain, BlackBerry announced its strengthening in security, with the company’s recent acquisition of SecuSmart as a perfect example.

BlackBerry and SecuSmart in the past few years partnered on the SecuSUITE platform that lets you use your smartphone with a high level end-to-end security.

In our collaboration of coverage from MWC 2015, David from BlackBerry-FR had the opportunity to interview Hans Christoph Quelle, founder of SecuSmart and Christoph Erdmann, the co-founder, to learn more about their company and acquisition with BlackBerry.

What is the main activity of SecuSmart?

Our main mission is to secure voice call. Most users are only thinking about to secure the data, but put away what can be transmitted by voice. The voice has to be handeled as the same way as a shared file. And nowadays , it becomes more important because “simple systems” such as voice assistants, which are increasingly integrated in our all days devices (Smartphones, Cars, TV, …), are able to interpret it. That is why it’s important not to overlook it and to process it as well as the data, hence the need to secure it.

Since the acquisition of BlackBerry, What has changed for you?

Partnership between BlackBerry and Samsung reassures governments by allowing them to use a more heterogeneous Park Smartphone, such as the latest Samsung Galaxy S6. There are 3 important points to secure a Smartphone: secure voice, secure data and allow the user the be free to use it as a traditional smartphone.

What is the advantage of using SecuSmart?

With SecuSmart you use your smartphone without the constraint of having a second dedicated device for secure communications.

Who is this solution intended for?

We can count on governments, members of the G7 and G20, senior executives in the automotive industry, the oil industry and many others. The demand for secure voice was there, but there were no sustainable solution. SecuSuite is easy to manage, easy to install and easy to use.

    How does it work?

The solution is based on integrated co-processor into the microSD card to handle the encryption (AES 128 bit). Vodafone Germany, longtime partner, developed quickly “Vodafone Secure Call” on iOS and Android, which is based on VoIP. This application is ideal to protect against electronic eavesdropping, and caters to all kind of businesses seeking to protect their datas.

    Who are your main competitors?

It is difficult to talk about competition in this sector. Each government has its own systems and are more inclined to use locals solutions. Now that BlackBerry took part in SecuSmart, it will be more easy to deploy it worldwide.

BlackBerry continually invests in data security, and all their latest partnerships have positioned the Canadian company in a suitable position for securing governments, corporations, and more.

That's pretty funny. But what's not is the following.

One of North America's Largest Construction Companies Chooses MobileIron for its Mobile Future

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- MobileIron (NASDAQ: MOBL) today announced that PCL Construction has selected its enterprise mobility management (EMM) platform to secure and manage apps and content on 4,500 mobile devices. At PCL, the largest contracting organization in Canada and sixth largest in the US, it is important for project teams to receive information wherever they are—the field is no exception.

"We needed an EMM platform that could be tailored to our unique infrastructure," said Mark Bryant, Chief Information Officer, PCL. "We evaluated the top EMM providers and it was clear that MobileIron was the best fit for us. The platform stood out because of its customizability and its impressive ecosystem of technology partner integrations."

    Transforming Job Sites with Mobility

PCL's construction teams rely on SharePoint and a large number of apps both internally developed and purchased thru the vendor app stores. Electronic touch-screen kiosks throughout job sites provide digital access to updated blueprints so team members don't waste time tracking down the paper versions. Site managers use tablets to access PCL's proprietary systems like the Safety Management Center which provides safety trend-analysis and graphs in real time. Bryant's team is challenged to protect sensitive corporate data while simultaneously providing easy access to corporate resources.

"We can only realize the benefits of mobile and connected project teams if our people actually use the technology," said Bryant. "MobileIron's certificate enrollment makes it drop dead easy for employees to sign in, and the platform makes it simple for our administrators to provision access to back end resources."

Simplifying Mobility in a Diverse IT Environment

PCL's environment includes Cisco ISE, Office 365, ServiceNow, SharePoint, and System Center Configuration Manager. To effectively secure and manage mobile apps and devices in this diverse landscape, the company needed a comprehensive EMM solution with the ability to extend corporate policies from the endpoint to the data center.

"We are in the midst of moving to Cisco access points and MobileIron's integration with Cisco ISE is especially interesting as our infrastructure evolves," said Bryant. "MobileIron works with all the technology platforms that matter to us."

"While we were upgrading our wireless infrastructure, it was identified that we needed to simplify our wireless strategy for our end users," stated Matthew Fellner, Solution Architect, PCL. "Mail configuration, wireless configuration, and connectivity to internal resources as well as a clearly defined company App-Store should be configured when end-users receive their device, or alternatively, if they want to bring in their own device, we would be able to manage those devices as well. Combine this with setting some basic policies and secure settings; it was a clear choice to go with Mobileiron.
I see these green and yellow PCL Construction signs on just about every development site in the GTA. Sad BlackBerry couldn't sign this deal instead.

PCL likely isn't as concerned with security as with just managing their devices. So essentially Mobile Iron wasn't needed because it was the best of the best but the best fit for their needs of "good enough ". Just my biases 2 cents.

Why BlackBerry has a fighting chance at a comeback

The new Blackberry Passport smartphone. (GUSTAU NACARINO/REUTERS)

Does BlackBerry have a chance at a comeback, or will the company fall further to become the next great Canadian tragedy?

Time will tell, but thanks to its new-found strength in apps, impressive devices, e-mail superiority, unwavering commitment to security and strong position to benefit from the growing world of connected devices, I believe it has a fighting chance.

    Apps

In the flurry of noise, its easy to lose perspective of the subtle repositioning of BlackBerry as an Android device. The recent arrival of the Amazon App store is the catalyst that will address concerns about the availability of common apps.

Mark Twain famously said that history does not repeat itself but it sure does rhyme. The arrival of the Amazon App store preloaded on each Passport and Classic device is reminiscent in certain respects of the historic August, 1997, deal that saw Microsoft Corp. invest $150-million (U.S.) to save Apple Inc. from bankruptcy, and even more importantly, promised a working version of Microsoft Office for the Apple operating system.

This subtle development ended up having significant ramifications as it removed a critical barrier to user adoption and heralded the true comeback of Apple.

(Microsoft exited its position in Apple in 2003. Had it held its ownership, today that stake would be worth over $30-billion.)

    Handsets

The more obvious evidence of a resurgent BlackBerry can be seen in the device user reviews of the Passport and recently launched Classic.

Online reviews in Canada are quite strong with most comments at Best Buy, Future Shop, Telus, Rogers and Bell rating the device five out of five stars. Both devices only recently launched in the United States at AT&T on Feb. 20.

Interestingly, the biggest complaint is lack of supply. Despite management repositioning the company toward software, a winning product cycle is upon us.

Meanwhile, Amazon has officially taken the lead as consumer content curator for BlackBerry users. It makes perfect sense when you consider the massive effort it takes to gather content from music, television, film and now applications each industry with its unique dynamics creating a very complex task to manage.

Yet the companys own app store, BlackBerry World, persists as a niche as the certification authority for applications that wont steal from you or your network. Certification from BlackBerry Guardian, which checks apps for malicious software of privacy concerns, will be a stamp of approval and this will be worthy of the minimal effort for serious enterprise app makers.

The Amazon and BlackBerry brands together have a nice synergy when it comes to consumer and enterprise applications credibility. BlackBerry is not compelled to do a deal with Apple because users can bring their iTunes content over to their BlackBerrys, although apps are not transferable.

    E-mail

We live increasingly in a 140-character, Snapchat, WhatsApp, BBM quick-messaging society. But among the best-paying users, a legion of executives, bankers, lawyers, accountants, venture capitalists and government leaders universally agree that e-mail is the common language of business.

While its obvious that the keyboard is an archaic user interface system, the more important focal point among loyal users is the importance of messaging. In this area, BlackBerry reigns king of all devices.

The BlackBerry e-mail system is consistently rated the best of all its competitors. And it is a well-chosen aspect of software to have technical and brand leadership.

The BlackBerry system is so secure that sovereign nations have asked carriers to combine the device with Microsoft software as a backdoor to get access to PIN messages, which would otherwise be completely anonymous.

The embarrassing 2011 launch of the PlayBook tablet without an e-mail client was partly due to the difficulty the company had in modifying its own hyper-secure system to send the same messages to more than one device.

With messaging systems exposed to government eavesdropping, BlackBerry on-device encryption is a big deal. If the information is not encrypted on the device, its not really secure.

    Connected devices

The Internet of Things (IoT), or the proliferation of connected devices, will bring a geometric increase in the complexity of the network. Cisco is predicting an expansion from 10 billion devices presently connected to the Internet to 50 billion connections within the next several years.

Many of the new connections will be machine or sensor-based. This presents a new complexity of network management. In particular, if mobile enterprise software is a security risk, then IoT network security concerns are much worse.

IoT will be a security nightmare and BlackBerry is positioned to secure all smart devices connected to the network. I expect its massive network operating centre will resurface as the cloud services platform to the IoT network, including competing smartphone players.

    A revival?

A solid product cycle is a precursor to increasing sales. Yet restricted supply and a shift in device revenue recognition adds some risk to the current quarter.

At the same time, overall revenue quality is increasing as enterprise recurring revenue grows as a portion of sales.

Opinions are generally negative as seen by the increasing short interest as a percentage of daily volume. And for good reason. In the first quarter of 2009, BlackBerry enjoyed 55.3-per-cent U.S. market share. Over the past six years, this market share has eroded to a paltry 0.4 per cent worldwide, based on IDC data.

Revenue at its peak includes $4.5-billion in device revenue per quarter now the expectation is a tenth of that number.

While expectations are low, its also easier to impress, and the company is no longer expected to go bankrupt. I expect quotes calling for the death of the company will soon be replaced with comparisons to other Android vendors.

BlackBerry is now hitting software targets and the dramatic shift in leadership has been well received by analysts. While regulatory hurdles persist, management is no longer an impediment to a sale of all or part of the business.

Once the company stabilizes its decline and is viewed more optimistically, I expect we will better appreciate some of its prized assets.

Aspiring immigrants to Canada are told of how the BlackBerry is a made-in-Canada success story. Having survived to fight another day, we wait to see if the BlackBerry cycles back to relevance, or falls to the annals of lost opportunity, competing with the Avro Arrow as a symbol of wasted innovation leadership.

Unless I am mistaken, BES12 can do this, and if Silver licenses are still available, it seems like a no-brainer.

    Nothing really new:
BlackBerry Can?t Shake Handsets as It Bets on Software - Bloomberg Business

(Bloomberg) -- BlackBerry Ltd. has been clear its future lies in selling services and software to professionals who are doing more of their work on the go. So why does it keep unveiling new phones?

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company debuted the Leap touch-screen phone at the Mobile World Congress on Tuesday, and said it has plans for three more devices this year. That’s in addition to the Passport and Classic, two keyboard-equipped phones announced in the second half of 2014.

“For a company touting a software turnaround, that’s a lot of handsets,” said Daniel Ernst, an analyst at Hudson Square Research in New York.

While some are perplexed, others say BlackBerry needs as much hardware revenue as it can get to help it through the transition. With Foxconn Technology Group building most of the phones, the risk of a dud isn’t as big as it might appear.

Chief Executive Officer John Chen took over BlackBerry in November 2013 with a plan to replace hardware revenue by opening up the company’s device management service, known as BES12, to non-BlackBerry phones and building out a new software business.

Investors are on board: the stock has doubled since Chen’s first day on the job, closing yesterday in Toronto at C$13.61.

There’s still a long way to go to reduce the company’s reliance on phones. Hardware sales accounted for 46 percent of revenue in the quarter ending Nov. 29 while dropping 24 percent to $361 million from the same period a year earlier.

    Cheaper Manufacturing

“They have optimistic targets for software growth of $500 million, but quite frankly they will need to grow at a very fast pace for several more years,” Brian Colello, an analyst at Morningstar Investment Services said by phone from Chicago. “To the extent that they can gain anything in hardware and eke out profitability, it will help BlackBerry through the transition.”

One of Chen’s first moves was to transfer manufacturing to Taiwan-based Foxconn as BlackBerry’s share of the global smartphone market slid to less than 1 percent.

BlackBerry designs the phones while Foxconn takes the risk, said Ken Dulaney, a Santa Clara, California-based analyst at Gartner Inc.

“That’s the trick he’s pulled off,” Dulaney said by phone. The price of manufacturing also is dropping rapidly, making it easier to generate profit on lower-end phones, he said.

Hardware margins were positive in the last two quarters, James Yersh, BlackBerry’s chief financial officer, said during a conference call on Nov. 29.

    Keyboard Aficianados

Ernst, the Hudson Square analyst, said he doubts BlackBerry will make money from the new phones and the company should focus on selling its software and device-management service.

“There’s a certain segment of the market that wants that keyboard and I don’t think that goes to zero any time soon,” he said. “But to have so many different models it just makes it harder to do that job.”

The Leap is geared toward business users who don’t want a keyboard, Chen told Bloomberg TV on Tuesday.

“The mid- or high-end professionals, they love the keyboards,” he said. “The entry-level people, a lot of them like to have a touch screen, so they’ve been asking for one and so we did one for them.”

The device plans were unveiled a day after Chen announced the company would take software and applications running on BlackBerrys and re-purpose them for Apple Inc.’s iPhones and iPads, and Android and Windows devices. BlackBerry has also announced partnerships with Samsung Electronics Co., Google Inc. and Boeing Co. to integrate those companies’ mobile business tools into BES12.

BlackBerry doesn’t have to worry about that strategy undercutting its own device sales because its target market is so narrow, Colello said.

“If they could carve out a nice, profitable niche selling to government, selling to regulated industries, then the hardware business might not be a total drag,” he said. “That’s the case they are trying to make.”

    Some interesting bits:
BlackBerry death greatly exaggerated as company prepares four new phones for 2015

To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of BlackBerry's death as a handset-maker have been greatly exaggerated, as the Canadian company continues its vast turnaround efforts with plans for four new smartphones this year.

During a press conference across the road from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the company announced a new entry-level touchscreen phone called Leap, said a new Porsche Design handset was coming soon, gave a sneak peak at an all-new phone with a curved touchscreen and slide-out keyboard, and said a fourth model would arrive later in 2015.

From the entry-level Leap, which is purely a touch screen phone with no physical keyboard, to the undoubtedly expensive Porsche Design model and so-called 'slider,' it was clear to see BlackBerry still considers itself well and truly a member of the smartphone industry.

By far the most talked-about by journalists - and partying like it's the early 2000s all over again - the as-yet unnamed 'slider' will be a flagship handset with a 5in screen, curved at both sides like the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, and it's going on sale "at some point in 2015."

The company refused to give away any more details on the slider, but BlackBerry's head of software Charles Eagan said the curved screen edges were there "for a reason," suggesting they will serve a purpose like on the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy Note Edge. Below that screen is a slide-out physical keyboard, giving users the flexibility of a large touch screen and tactile keyboard in one handset.

BlackBerry unveiled a new mid-market smartphone dubbed the BlackBerry Leap that is set to replace the Z3 device launched a year ago, in a move to woo buyers in certain emerging markets where BlackBerry still has a fairly large client base(REUTERS/Gustau Nacarino)

    Leaping forward

Leap is a $279 (188/€254) handset with a touch screen - no physical keyboard - the same processor as the Z10 and is intended to be used by what BlackBerry calls "young career builders."

Speaking to IBTimes UK, Eagan said this means the phone is intended as a fleet device, where a company wants to roll out a cheap, secure handset to a large number of non-executive employees.

Also on BlackBerry's roadmap for 2015 is a Porsche Design handset known internally as Keian and named after the son of CrackBerry website's Ryan Blundell, who died in January 2014.

Usually based on current BlackBerry handsets, the company isn't saying what its next Porsche Design phone will look like, and is instead letting the partner company reveal the phone at a later date.

Finally, the fourth handset for 2015 will be a "hero" phone with a physical keyboard, but BlackBerry offered no more details on this.

    Wearables

Eagan did offer a glimpse into BlackBerry's attitude towards wearables, however. When IBTimes UK suggested that Google Glass and other wearables are as attractive to business and industry use as consumers, the executive said: "We're certainly looking at the ecosystem and how to enhance and introduce these devices and other kinds of devices into the platform."

Eagan added: "We have been studying how they enhance the business experience. We are looking at devices that are not phones that we could bring to the market," however he would not be drawn to say if this means software solutions for existing wearables, or BlackBerry's own hardware.

Cowen: BlackBerry Leap Is Actually More Of A 'Step'

In a recent report, Cowen analysts gave their take on BlackBerry Ltd BBRY 1.38% following the company's presentation at the Mobile World Congress. Analysts believe that BlackBerry still has a long way to go in its transition to a sustainable business model.
    Transition Continues

BlackBerry unveiled its new Leap smartphone at the media event, but analysts believe that investors shouldn't put too much emphasis on the role hardware will play in the future of the company. Analysts believe that BlackBerry is currently about halfway through its long-term transition from a hardware-centric business to a "software-centric, cross-platform enterprise mobility management and security play."

Related Link: BlackBerry Is 'Catering To Entrepreneurs' As They Move Away From Android
    Hardware Remains Important

Despite the move toward software, hardware still has an important role to play in the near-term. Major software revenue is still several quarters away. In the meantime, hardware devices such as the Leap still account for more than 45 percent of BlackBerry's revenue.

The unveiling of the Leap also came with an announcement by BlackBerry of plans to add three additional new smartphones to its 2015 portfolio.

The Leap is a 5.0" all-touchscreen device with an 8MP camera, a 25-hour battery life and BlackBerry's signature security system. The Leap is a departure from BlackBerry's other recent releases that have emphasized the traditional physical keyboard. Analysts believe that the Leap will be replacing the market of the Z3 and, therefore, should be considered a success if it meets or exceeds the Z3's 3.5-4 million in annual sales.
    Outlook

Though little is known about the three additional BlackBerry smartphones coming later in 2015, analysts are forecasting a 45 percent year-over-year increase in hardware revenue. Cowen has a Market Perform rating on BlackBerry and a $10 target for the stock.

If the Cowen report is to be true, then approximately 1 million Z3 per Q ( top estimate. ) Between that and the strong sales launch of Passport, Classic and the remaining Z30, Q10 ,Z10's we may just have a good chance of beating Q3's sales of 1.9 million devices. And maybe close to the 2.5/Q that John has been harping along. Also gives fuel to some theory on why the classic was delayed for a few days/weeks so initial strong sales to be recognized in the current Q.
