Good morning everyone! There's some crazy buying opportunities out there during this decline in energy share prices. You know this won't last forever. Hope everyone has a great day and make this day yours.

I'm hoping for over three million blackberry phones sold this quarter, if they pass the four million mark, it will be a blessing.. It would show a reversal of the trends. As for the zauba site, those graphs are misleading. They include repairs and not for sale phones. My surprise was that they were selling the 9720 phones to India.
Not much 9720 phones were sold , but still a surprise they were selling.

But this is only a guess and we must wait for the ER to find out the number.

Seems like a lot of people in here are getting overly excited. For the record, here is was I think.

Hardware based on 2.6m handsets (BB7 and BB10) will net 451m.
Services will continue to decline and net 380m.
Software will be about the same at 73m.

Total revenue will be stable around 900m.

assume cost of operation decreases to 1033m ( the average of the last two quarters)
GAAP per share would be -0.24
    NON-GAAP/shr would be -0.12
but assume cost of operations decreases to 733m ( due to BB7 fees coming off the books)
GAAP per share would be 0.33
    NON-GAAP/shr would be 0.16

Since we all expect Chen to under-promise and over-deliver, I wouldn't be surprised to see him front load some additional costs (for the classic, for example) to match the topline revenue. He expected to be breakeven this ER and show growth next ER.
It would be prudent to get ahead on costs and have more wiggle room next ER. Chen is playing the long game after all.

Great analysis. Do you have GAAP and non-GAAP reversed in the second case?

Say 0.6 million of the 2.6 million devices were passports, we're looking at $360 million from those devices alone. The remaining 2 million phones should generate more revenue than your estimate($451M) and $360 million. Perhaps another $400M?

1 million+ passports would be amazing. This quarter is all about the Passport and sales were much better than Blackberry expected.

I think people are running away with passport figures.

Sales were better than forecast, but I don't think they forecast high sales for a niche product from the beginning.

They could have forecast 300k sales for the quarter and sold 400k.

I'm just trying to be more prudent.

A large amount of the 200k orders were most likely channel fill.

My expectation for Passport sales is < 500,000. Closer to 400,000, I'd say.

Cost cuts - Other than Adobe/patent loyalties that were going away, I thought their cost-cutting spree was already over. I am not expecting any cost cutting. If any cuts are done, they'd probably be balanced by increased spend on marketing.

I think BlackBerry is in the quiet period, and as such might have to hold this for the Quarterly announcement.

"During a Quiet Period, a publicly listed company cannot make any announcements about anything that could cause a normal investor to change their position on the company's stock. Normally, that means the company does not discuss any of the following:

New deals or wins signed in that current quarter. Announcements about previously sold implementations going live are allowed, but must be explicitly described as such
    Management changes
    Progress against company goals
    Major product or service announcements
    Major partnership announcements"

On Oct 17th, Chen said "We took a very conservative approach and didn't order too many."
We "know" 200k were sold in the the first production run.
White and red variants are now available which probably means that sales of the original black passport are no longer exceeding supply. We know the Passport is built "in-house" so we can't expect huge production runs.

BlackBerry had a sale to clear out old stock that seems to have gone well judging by the number of " Soldout on..." posts we've seen in this thread. Chen only needs to sell 2.5m/qtr to make his stated goal of 10m /yr for the division to be profitable. He may have boosted handset sales this quarter because services fees are dropping faster and software sales are coming in slower then expected. The extra handset revenue might be to stabilize the topline.

Passport numbers need to be broken out at the ER so we can get a better feel for the volumes that BlackBerry can produce in-house.

If Chen shows a surprise profit, even a small one each time but growing each quarter, for just two quarters, shorts would exit and SP would be at $25+. There might not be a short squeeze but even an orderly exit of shorts would get this stock to $25+. All we need is profit growing over two consecutive quarters. Say, EPS $.25 and then next quarter, EPS $.55

That kind of explains the drop from $12's to the $10's. Shorts needed to short more to keep the SP from going up.
