I wonder if someone here, on this blog, could monitor what the German media have to say about this deal, if anything? Spiegel, Frankfurter Zeitung?

Well, I have just answered my own question...

Here is what was said in the latter:
    Blackberry kauft ?Merkel-Phone?-Entwickler Secusmart

    GT is our friend.

    Got to run...
    Secusmart
BlackBerry buys developer of the "Merkel-Phone"
BlackBerry threatens to slip into obscurity. And now wants with a focus on government and corporate customers turn the tide. These take over the Canadian company, which also encrypts the phone to the Chancellor.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel uses the encryption technology of Secusmart.

The Dsseldorf-based encryption specialist Secusmart whose technology is also used in mobile phones of the federal government, is acquired from the smartphone pioneer Blackberry. A purchase price was not disclosed on Tuesday. Secusmart will remain under the umbrella of BlackBerry a German GmbH, based in Germany, emphasized Secusmart Managing Director Hans-Christoph source. The connection with BlackBerry is a chance to expand its international business. In addition Secusmart get access to development resources from Blackberry.

Secusmart is a specialist in voice encryption. The company upgraded since last year along with BlackBerry and the federal government. The as "Merkel-Phone" featured devices come from the smartphone manufacturer from Canada, the software on it by Dsseldorf. Secusmart chief source assumes that it also with a Canadian Secusmart mother has to change anything. The crypto maps for encryption come from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The German Telekom German authorities supplied with safe smart phones, it uses as a base Samsung devices.

BlackBerry had once dominated the smartphone market, but lost connection to rivals such as Samsung and Apple with its iPhone. The market share slipped into the single-digit percentage range, high losses reinforced doubts about the survival of the group. The acting CEO since last fall John Chen tries to turn things around, especially with a focus on corporate customers and governments. Secusmart BlackBerry can complement its own range of secure communication channels to encrypted calls.

Secusmart had recently announced in March a partnership with the telecom giant Vodafone to bring encrypted phone calls to the mass market. The idea is to offer encrypted calls via an app on various smartphone platforms. Other vendors have also such encryption apps in the program.

Encryption was moved after the revelations about rampant espionage of intelligence, especially the American NSA in the foreground. Last fall, attended reports of a stir, according to which a mobile phone by German Chancellor Angela Merkel said to have been bugged for years by the U.S. Secret Service. This was to Merkel's private cell phone. Secusmart always emphasized the encryption of the new government cell phones is safe. Even BlackBerry had repeatedly rejected reports that NSA had cracked some security mechanisms of the Group.

I want to start by saying that I think John Chen is the man.... But I think he did make a big mistake when he said that hes not sure Blackberry will ever return to being iconic. He very easily could have put a positive spin on that answer and said something like, " I absolutely believe that BlackBerry will be and already is iconic in securing confidential communications for our government and general public customers alike." Even though we all know what he meant, I think it gave the nay-sayers fodder for their cannons to rally behind the watch BBRY fail campaign. Just my .02$

Edit: Also worth mentioning; with the new job offer I just received with its $10,000 USD raise I will happily take this opportunity to enjoy the lower stock price to add to my portfolio.

Definitely a division going on here. European Union vs. NA.

I am sure other European governments will flow Germany's lead in providing secure snoop free communications.

Let the battle begin. Being a Brit, I know where my allegiance lies!

Well BlackBerry is an NA based company and has an American CEO that has even met with president Obama. Perhaps you should consider switching your allegiance.

I disagree. I like how Chen under promises and over delivers. What is interesting is that the question went from can BlackBerry survive? To can BlackBerry become iconic again? Definitely a step in the right direction. Shorts/haters making a lot of noise lately

American CEO has nothing to do with the operating procedures of a Canadian based company that answers to Canadian law.

I agree with promise the moon and deliver the stars but at the same time you can do it in a way that doesn't leave a question or doubt in the minds of the populace.

I think he did the right thing. It's to early to make that statement. He has respect of WS. He is doing all the right things . It's like when he said BlackBerry has 50/50 chance. If he came out and said 80/20 or better then 80/20 like he is saying now no one would believe him. His statements will pack a much greater punch later on I think.

Will finish week in the positive.

Just hate how if Apple or Google made same announcements this week, as BlackBerry has, their stock would be up leaps and bounds. Is brutal.

But I confident, in 5 years I'll be damn glad I bought in when I did

Lol exactly. 20000 gain minis 6000 phones = gain of 14000. Plus we still don't know who will manage the 6000 toy phones? Will Ford make another Microsoft like error? How much will this mistake cost Ford?

The thing is, in the states they actually believe Apple is better and BB is dying... sad really. I'm sure once a few execs see the passport, see the battery life, spreadsheet functionality and get burned with a dead device when you really need it to work things will change.

Same stuff we were saying about how Z30. "Once they see it".

Waiting for ppl to use it is a p*$$poor marketing plan. It needs to be shoved down their throats with in your face advertising.... advertising the benefits and features of the device, not advertising some guy with elephant legs walking around and eventually exploding into a dust of bright colors.

Is it odd that just after JC brings out the "wall hugger" zinger, Stanford trots out a "better battery coming soon" announcement. The conspiracy onion just has so many layers...

Ok, the carrot is dangling, and today's news just seems to be an inevitable segway to a merger or partnership with SAP.

It is ringing loud and clear. This will inherently include Sybase, as part of the SAP companies.

Hat tip to SuperFly for pegging this when it finally gets announced.
