OT: Samsung's latest results

BBC News - Samsung forecasts 25% drop in profit

Samsung Electronics has forecast a 25% drop in profit for the second quarter due to a slowdown in the smartphone market and a strong Korean currency.

It expects to make an operating profit of 7.2 trillion won ($7.1bn; �4.2bn) in the April-to-June period, down from 9.5 trillion won a year ago.

Its operating profit has now fallen for three straight quarters.

"The golden era of high-end smartphones is clearly over. Those were the handsets that helped firms such as Samsung make healthy profit margins," Ajay Sunder, a vice president specialising in the telecoms sector with consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, told the BBC.

"Now it is all about high-volume and low-margin handsets. And on that front the competition is getting fiercer with each passing day."

Various other smartphone makers including China's Xiaomi, Huawei and ZTE have been increasing their market share steadily.

Mr Sunder said that given the slowing growth and increased competition in the smartphone market, Samsung needed to look at boosting its presence in other sectors if it wanted to sustain high growth rates.

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930.KS> on Tuesday issued unexpectedly weak quarterly earnings guidance which put it on track for its worst results in two years and cast doubt on the smartphone leader's strategy against cheaper Chinese rivals.

Though the South Korean company said it saw better business conditions in the third quarter, it faces slowing market growth, intensifying price competition at the lower end and the looming threat of Apple Inc's next iPhone.

"The earnings deliver a harsh reality check to Samsung that it is not Apple, but Samsung. Its strategy of selling phones at expensive prices will not work anymore, as Chinese rivals also offer good enough phones at much cheaper prices," Lee Seung-woo, a technology analyst at IBK Securities, said.

"Samsung needs to review its smartphone strategy," he said.

Let's not be fooled in here by the BBM PR out there...

We all love BBM, but it STILL doesn't work properly for iOS, and the comment about incredible growth is just a barefaced lie. We should all be looking forward to the day when BBMx, and it's business focused aspects are all up and running smoothly, but we certainly aren't there yet.

Hi slipstream89 !!

Great question, in theory gaps are easy to fill because there haven't been any trades associated with those price levels so traders are NOT looking at taking minute amounts of profits in those areas. You either have a nice profit after a gap or you have a sizeable loss if you are short. In our case, the shorts are really hurting because not only are they subjected to a rising stock, they aren't able to cover on the way out unless they contribute to the benefit of the longs. You only have to look at Netflix and Tesla to see some big gaps that have never been filled. But of course there are gaps in many other stocks like many of the bios that will never be filled. The other misconception is that if we plot a target price of $ 10.80/shr, then anything plus over minus that number means we have made a change in the trend, what is really happening is the TA market is trying to change the trend. Sometimes they put more funds into a breakout and other times they sell just before the "technical number" therefore we like to see a "range" of breakout pricing, and, some possible stops in the area get hit before we can assume a TA level has been breached.

So here is my chart for BBRY:



I mentioned a week or so ago that we needed to take out the 2014 highs, hold those gains and actually make some distance on that TA pivot point so that stops are hit, shorts are clearly covering and we are assured by increasing volume that the trend has in fact changed. We got all of that yesterday with BBRY. When you look at the news over the past few days, it is surprisingly positive, the stock had to rally on all of that news. In addition, the sector wants to go up with AAPL moving higher again so we have some strong buying coming into the stock. The bad news is that we are grossly over-bought here and subject to a round of HEAVY profit taking. The stock, in less than 6 weeks, has gone from $ 7.18 to $ 11.32 and that's a big gain for anyone!

Don't focus on the very short-term issues like gaps and over-shooting of TA numbers and look at the momentum and the news that is driving it.

One last thing, that huge gap that was made back in the Fall is now our friend and it extends to $ 13.40/shr and so our new range, assuming that we can test and hold $ 10.90/shr here, is $ 11.00 - $ 13.40 which we should have NO PROBLEM doing in the months ahead. Let's plan on closing above $ 10.90 today and testing it a few times this week before we feel comfortable that we are in a new and higher sideways channel. I would worry if we traded much below $ 10.80 intraday (like $ 10.60/shr), and not worry at all if we stay above $ 10.90/shr on a closing basis. Of course, if the general market is tanking, we can fully expect BBRY to tank along with it. And as you all know, news trumps everything! GL

Poet (ptk:ca) (poetf:us)announced 100mn size and foundry work for their new optical IC. Stock is up 7% this morning. And is being listed with the SEC. Could be a big disruptor to the chip industry. Can anybody give any insight on this? Blackberry could have bought in to this tech last year. If it takes hold everyone will have to use it.
