That would be my hope, that he sees enough progress in the business plan to hold onto those shares. Alas, he is not a private Fund but a public one and there is an existing obligation to shareholders to maximize returns and minimize risk and we all know that BlackBerry is his largest investment and above many of his past. It appears that the plan was always to purchase the bonds, capture a paper return of 6% on the investment and firm up the Q growth for Fairfax as it goes forward. He sold blocks of stock on previous rallies and we have to believe, until it is proven otherwise, that his plan is to sell the balance of the shares. The bond conversion and the actual shares held are too close in numbers, to be true here, he is likely to sell more shares because of this. We'll see, I just wanted to get it out there that some headwinds aren't related to the companies' performance itself. Chen can do little to modify the out-come of the market and its ability to place a hold on the price of the stock. I still think we are heading for $ 10.80 highs of the recent past, it will take longer than some want to wait that's all!

Berlin drops Verizon over US spying fears - FT.com

"Berlin has terminated a contract with Verizon over concerns about the security of its systems in the first sign of serious commercial repercussions in Europe from the Snowden revelations of mass US government spying on its allies.
The German interior ministry said the cancellation was linked to the “relationship between foreign intelligence agencies and companies” that the rogue National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden exposed last year. The revelation of surveillance of emails by US government agencies, and the complicity of some US companies, provoked particular outrage in Germany
Among the revelations, it emerged that Verizon was required by a court order to hand over information about telephone calls on its network to the NSA on an “ongoing, daily” basis. The order barred the company from publicly disclosing the existence of the request. The metadata collected by the NSA included the number calling, being called, and the location and length of the call.
Berlin said on Thursday it was reorganising its information and communication systems to provide an “increased level of security”.
A review of Germany’s official communications infrastructure has been underway for years. It was prompted, the government said, by the increased level of demand on the system and the threat posed by malicious programs.
The Snowden affair, however, has focused the government’s attention on the potential security threat posed to Germany’s “security-critical communications infrastructure” by the linkage between foreign spy agencies and companies, the interior ministry said.
Berlin’s decision is the latest sign of economic fallout from the NSA affair, after Brazil’s decision to abandon Microsoft Outlook for its government email network, adopting a domestically developed system instead.
The contract held by Verizon in Germany was revised in 2010 to prepare for the overhaul of the system. The interior ministry said Verizon had now been informed the contract would be “gradually phased out”.
Detlef Eppig, managing director of Verizon Germany, said in a statement: “Verizon Germany is a German company and we comply with German law. We have made clear our position, that the US government is unable to access customer data stored outside the US.”
The German interior ministry said its aim was to establish a state communications infrastructure with an increased level of security that would be “uniformly provided by a single partner”.
The German government would have the right to intervene in the operation of the network in case of a crisis.
German chancellor Angela Merkel has been particularly angered by revelations that the NSA had monitored her mobile phone. She has proposed creating EU-based internet services in which data would not be sent across the Atlantic.
The cancelled Verizon contract relates to Germany’s federal administrative network, which is used to disseminate information to federal agencies.
The network used for communication between German ministries, known as the Berlin-Bonn Information Network, is provided by Deutsche Telekom, the former state-owned monopoly which is now Europe’s biggest phone company.
An interior ministry spokeswoman said she was not immediately able to give the value of the Verizon contract.
Some US tech companies such as Microsoft have responded to anxiety among European customers by offering to have personal data stored on servers outside the US. However other US companies including Google fear such Eurocentric clouds could fragment the internet."

This is still a big battle, but I like the moves that have been made.

I would like to point out that SAP is a German company and many of the blackberry execs are ex SAP. Interesting I think.

    Hi jake simmons3 !!

The Bond issue is a formidable one for us as we all know that Prem Watsa has sold millions of his shares above $ 10.00 as he seeks to eliminate his share holdings and just hold onto his bond investment at a 6% yield. I don't blame him for doing this as he did go to great lengths to save the company at a time when the media were relentless in trying to destroy it. But now he needs to satisfy his shareholders by showing growth in his investments and that means selling off those shares. When you do the math for this past quarter, you are looking at a modest EPS gain or loss based upon the 525 MM shares floating at the time. At some point, normally when the stock goes above the strike price of $ 10.00, you need to include those 125 MM newly converted shares into that math. What happens is that a soon as BBRY starts to make money, everyone will base those profits on fully diluted shares outstanding. That means that BBRY will have to earn some huge returns to offset the dilution of the stock which in turn means that we won't be enjoying the same P/E ratios and other metrics that those in our sector enjoy today. If the stock is going to trade at a 30% lower multiple to its peers, we will always be looked at as that "also ran company".

In addition, BBRY is paying out $ 75 MM in interest each year now and carrying a $ 1.25 B debt on the books so it is in their best interest to retire some of that debt (not going to happen) or have those shares converted into stock. The ability of the stock to clear let's say, $ 11.00/shr is a huge challenge under those conditions. Any other company without such a monster overhang of stock dilution would have no problem seeing their stock move to recent highs and challenge their TA range. This is why I think we need to take some time to secure the $ 9.00 to $ 10.80 range, take Prem's shares off the market and accept that 125 MM shares are going to hit us soon. In this case, the run to the $ 10.00 strike is easy, getting past it is much more difficult than any other investment out there. It doesn't show up in the TA, it isn't a wall found at $ 10.00 on your chart but it is there in the area above $ 10.00 and they sell stock using average returns on their sales so that if they sold some at $ 10.40 they can sell some below $ 10.00 too. Hope that hopes?

I should add that the chart still looks good, we are clearly confirming that we belong in the higher channel today, and, there is always that possibility that Prem changes his mind and wants to hold the balance of his stock because he is encouraged by John Chen and BB's ability to turn the corner so fast. We will know soon enough if he feels the need to sell more shares, I hope not.
Fairfax has already balanced their position to their exposure criteria. You won't see them sell any more stock until their average cost triples from here. This is what they did with Bank of Ireland. Prem eluded to this during the pre ASM charity dinner and at the ASM. I could be wrong. But I believe Fairfax is going to hold the majority of their position for a while.

BlackBerry network hasn’t had a single vulnerability exposed: Sunil Lalvani - The Economic Times

BlackBerry is hoping that its competitively-priced Z3 smartphone will be successful in India. Depending upon how the device fares in the country, as well as the efficiencies brought in by Foxconn, the Canadian smartphone maker would decide on launching sub-$100 devices in India, country managing director Sunil Lalvani told ET. Edited excerpts:

At Rs 15,990, Z3 in India is priced higher than in Indonesia?
In Indonesia, the price comes close to Rs12,000 owing to carrier subsidy. In India, we have the VAT (value-added tax) and the customs duty structure which together have pushed the price up.

We are taking it through the retail and the e-commerce channel in India. Our retail partner and e-commerce partner, The MobileStore as well as Flipkart have come up with a cash back offer/ voucher of Rs1,000 on Z3 if you book the product between now and the launch.

Is BlackBerry looking at a sub-$100 phone?

Right now we want to focus on Z3. Depending upon a host of factors including the supply chain and the production efficiencies brought in by a manufacturer of Foxconn's size, we will then take a call on a sub-$100 handset.

What are your expectations from the Z3 given the glut of more affordable smartphones in the market?

When we slashed the prices of Z10 last year, we ran out of stocks and the uptake went by more than double. Z3 is being introduced as a touchscreen smartphone at a lesser price and we aren't competing just as a handset.

BlackBerry is an integrated, devices, software, services and enterprise solution provider. So we think it is a very competitive pricing for us.

In this price segment, you are competing directly with the likes of Micromax and Samsung, among others...

I would like to differ. We are seeing clear differentiation in the kind of users who use BlackBerry. The urban youth and the socially active hyperconnective individual is a typical BlackBerry user.

If you take Micromax as an example, they are a specialised handset company and do a great job at that. We are not that. Our early years of success were built on experience enabled on the devices which got us differentiated target subscribers, be it email on the go or BBM.

Even a Samsung wouldn't be a relevant comparison for us since Samsung specialises in hardware.

How is the enterprise segment looking for you in India?

A plethora of low cost devices has allowed enterprises to open up to the bring your own devices concept which in effect reduces capex burden on companies. However, many companies are getting paranoid about data security, especially law firms and financial services.

This is where BlackBerry's strength in data security and privacy comes into play. BlackBerry hasn't had a single vulnerability exposed on its network. In India, we have over a 1,000 firms with these servers installed with corporates.

Any plans to bring QNX to India?

Yes, absolutely. QNX powers 60% of automobile in North America. It is an embedded software in the vehicle.

It talks to the car, proactively does an analysis and sends information back to the server of the vehicle manufacturer, so it can rectify it in the next batch of cars. We are in negotiation with a leading Indian car manufacturer to implement this solution.

So we all very happy the way things are going, and we have crossed the nervous $10 a few times in the recent past days.
Now my question is did anyone sell at $10+ and bought back at $9.8-?
I remember last year a lot of people made a lot money on a single day.
Those who had bought at $7 sold at $18 and bought back at $12 in the same day and sold at $16 a few days later.

Although, the ship is a lot more study now and I am very thankful for that but was just wondering if anyone is doing anything of sort?
I do remember last year M-8 had increased has portfolio by 10%, if I am not mistaking, by doing this.

    Anyone?
