- I would have expected CrackBerry to write something like that, but I guess a story about abandoning BB for a few apps is more entertaining. I am still shocked about that article appearing on the front page and am equally shock that Mr. CrackBerry mocked the users for criticizing it. It's one thing to be a BB user and point out things that could be improved, but to have abandon a Z10 months ago and then write about why he won't come back unless....
To that I was thinking, who give a rat's @$$
Anyway, I am excited to see all the positive news lately and can't wait to see the new devices. Cheers gang.
CB10'n it via da Z...3006-13-14 07:18 PMLike 18 - I don't use the popular apps (Instagram, Candy Crush, and whatever else), so I have never cared that much about the app issue. I still don't have a single Android app on my phone.
Still, his article hits the nail on the head for a huge segment of society, whether some of us want to dismiss it as trolling or whatever else (trolling has started to become synonymous with ' You've said something I don't want to hear', I'm afraid).
For ME, BlackBerry is best, but I know loads of people who simply will not even think of buying a BlackBerry because it doesn't have native Instagram. That's just the way it is.
This is why selling more phones would break things wide open for BlackBerry. Sell more phones, increase market share, get all the major apps in BlackBerry World, and there is nothing to stop BlackBerry racing back to being a significant player in the consumer world. Whether we like what was said in the article, for the majority of consumers, it's bang on target.

Shame he's given free reign without a vetting process.
Edit: I see Kevin has addressed allot of everyone's concerns in his final post in "that " thread (started today)...fair enough, still want full disclosure if Umi has any monies/funds/convertibles in the short variety...thats fair...given his freedoms and connections I think?
(I expect the answer is "none of our business" lol)

Posted via CB1006-13-14 08:22 PMLike 6 - Agree^^...but I feel we are past the "must sell a ton to survive" bit. I think (at least in "the western world" we are as small, market share wise, as we are going to go.
Folks are fickle, and I know several who are moving devices just for the sake of moving. The app argument does hurt BlackBerry, no doubt...but some of those same folks come back to BB10 real quick when they realize that friggin back button sucks.
Just my thoughts...which have had a couple beers.

"Yes, BlackBerry is one that just does not fit into my growth portfolio. I've written about the reasons why. In short, they are not growing".
"Yes I actually think BB10 is amazing. Best OS out there. But I switched to Android as an experiment a few months ago, and if I had to do it over I'd pick iOS (Apple). For my needs (and this really is personal), there are two reasons I'd pick Android or iOS before BB.
1) Access to a huge selection of apps
2) Google services integration is beautiful on both platforms, but not on BB.
If BB could get access to the Google Play store (including Google services) then I'd go back to their devices in a heartbeat. BB10 is so fast, so slick, so awesome for people like me who are constantly messaging / emailing."06-13-14 08:56 PMLike 11 - Call me confused. Here on June 10 2014 Umi is stating this stuff for the Glob and Fail.

I expect more from Kevin. I fully expect him to make amend on that one. There is no way he feels at ease with that move. No way.

Unless the scan criteria utilizes 'key word' seaching.
BTW,
I understand that BlackBerry uses RSA tokens for some encryption, which is how the last NSA interception happened with the BlackBerry devices mentioned way back. This discovered (and known) 'backdoor token' was discussed in detail by one of my favorite experts: Steve Gibson. It wasn't the fault of BlackBerry.06-14-14 12:36 AMLike 0 - I don't use the popular apps (Instagram, Candy Crush, and whatever else), so I have never cared that much about the app issue. I used to want BlackBerry to sell millions of phones, but now I want to horde the technology to myself, and would rather the stock price rocket by means of the other avenues that we are now seeing appear.

Posted via CB1006-14-14 03:23 AMLike 0 - So what's all the fuss about?
Is it all about Chris Umiastowskis 'What Would It Take To Get Me Back To BlackBerry' 562-word opinion?
He has been a long time supporter of the company. I think anyone with his experience would never bet against John Chen. Also (all speculation of course), the timing of this article confirms the rumours we've been hearing for the last few days. Don't forget that the people over at CrackBerry or with good relationships with analysts over in Bay Street (= Chris Umiastowski) will ALWAYS be privy to information before most people do. Besides, I can't see how BB10 having access to Play Store or Google services could be a bad thing?06-14-14 03:36 AMLike 0 - I was thinking maybe Chris has some info that Google play is coming to BlackBerry World in the near future and hence the article. When it does come he can then do another article saying 'my issues are solved I am back to blackberry'.
I don't think it is too bad to have these opinions. It is good to keep grounded and see what the average consumer is looking like.
I personally don't use any Google products, only the search engine, and I plan to keep it that way.
Having said that I am sure there are millions that do and they simply couldn't survive without it. This will be a struggle for BlackBerry unless they can get these services on the platform some how.
Don't hate Chris too much. Besides he said that bb10 is a far superior product.

On the "Why bother with security?" theme...
This one should get a few chuckles...
From our friends in Germany:
Chinesisches Smartphone mit Spionagesoftware entdeckt | MDR.DE
Datensicherheit: Bochumer Firma G Data enttarnt erstes Spionage-Handy - Ruhrgebiet - Bild.de
A cell phone with integrated spy software
It had been suspected for a long time - but it would be the first time that it has also been demonstrated: this mobile phone is sold in Germany and worldwide, and it is already equipped from factory with spy software.
What does the spy software do?
The mobile phone is certainly very attractive: It looks like the Galaxy S4 from Samsung, even the packaging is very similar, and it can do everything that the original can. But there is an additional program that disguises itself as a normal app - and can do much more than the original, as Thorsten Urbanski from German security manufacturer "G Data" says "this spy program is able to read personal data and automatically forward it to servers abroad. Unnoticed by the user, it can install all kinds of apps and then steal for example online banking information, such as Mobile Tans and forward it directly to criminals. "In addition, according to G Data, the camera and microphone can be switched on: the records could then also be forwarded to external servers - without the phone owner's knowledge.
Which smartphone is it?
The device is the N9500 from the Chinese manufacturer Star. The smartphone apparently is becoming a best seller, as it costs in online trading only 130 to 165 Euro - making it much cheaper than comparable phones. There are also other advantages that will attract as many buyers apparently: "It is not a cheap device and looks visually to be very valuable. It has a quad-core and the latest Android operating system. It also includes many accessories: spare battery, charging cable, second shell, etc."
Can you delete the software?
Now, what can someone who has bought this phone do? - Unfortunately, not much, says Thorsten Urbanski of G Data: "Our antivirus software detects the malware, but the problem is: It is part of the device's firmware. This is not as easily uninstallable." In which case, only the entire operating system can be erased and a new installed. For a non-specialist that is hardly feasible…[...]
This is the model "N9500" from the Chinese manufacturer Star, which is sold in Germany and France. Security expert Thorsten Urbanski (45): "The bug is disguised as Google Play Store app. The mobile phone sends unnoticed data of unsuspecting owner to a server in China." With dire consequences.

- There are rumours flying about Z3 launching in India a week or so after Vietnam.
They all seem to stem, however, from this article http://indianexpress.com/article/tec...ound-rs-11000/ in which nothing is substantiated and the author seems to be guessing.
I would be very happy if it's correct I just haven't seen any credible sources.
Has anyone seen any substance to this claim?
