2013=Transition. 2014=Decision.
BlackBerry is in the peak of their transition year with their revamped platform launch, restructuring, updated reporting practices, etc. BlackBerry 10 device sales have fallen short of expectations due to incomplete, ineffective marketing. Margins on hardware are so thin that the current models are overpriced and upcoming ones are underspecced in relation to the price and new competitive offerings.
Which begs the question...will BlackBerry make the decision to exit the hardware business in 2014?
When Thorsten Heins speaks of the future of BlackBerry, he's brims with excitement when he mentions software & services. It's all about mobile computing, MDM, automotive solutions, BES 10, and BBM X. Hardware (and hardware innovation) is an afterthought. It almost seems like BlackBerry's hardware division is hanging by a thread to keep a relationship going with carriers and to provide a tool for enterprise.
