In May I will head out for safari in South Africa. Of the 3 week trip, about 12 days will be possibly without access to power. It is important that I can be reached while there. I have an 8830 and am told that I will have service, but I am concerned about power. I have a second battery, but would like an alternative source of power. I have a Solio, and just purchased a USB/AA-Battery charger from Boxwave. It doesn't appear that either is strong enough to charge my BB though (after a few seconds the "power cord" display goes off).

Does anyone have any suggestions on a back-up power source?

Stock up on batteries would be my suggestion. If you're not sure about any other way of having enough power. It's the only sure bet.

Have been on Safari in very remote areas.

    They all have generators.

You just need the dual voltage charger and almost all places have the converter.

Good luck. You should have no problems.
