Does it really matter they were selected??? In the end these people testing aren't BlackBerry users currently.

Are you sure they dont own blackberrys and use them?
I'm sure some of those Friends and Family selected are current blackberry users as well as other platforms.

Why in the hell would you invite random friends and family to participate in the beta? Don't you want people who are seasoned beta testers, who are going to put the software through its paces? Dumb.

Nope. But my point still stands that it doesn't really matter. It's being tested and that is all that matters. As long as it works the way it should at the end of testing , I could care less if they used chimpanzees.

The CrackBerry team would answer "No" if asked are they involved.

Bet they then couldn't pass a polygraph test if we asked them if they're in on it!

They will have seasoned beta testers...

A lot of Beta Zone testers are not seasoned beta testers either just optimists that want software early...

Fundamental axioms in software testing... An object or element is best broken by the completely ignorant user. Nobody manages to pass bad data faster or easier than a user who has no idea what is supposed to be passed.

I can confirm that's how it worked. My friend works for QNX, and he was able to invite 3 iPhone/Android users to the BBM beta. One of whom was a mutual friend of ours, an Android user. Well, he was accepted into the beta, and has been using it for a while. This friend used to be a BlackBerry user before switching to Android.

I don't know, probably because BBM is a communications application and having a bunch of random people gazing awkwardly against each other won't spark a good amount of usage?
