    Dear community,

I'm wondering what are the reasons for not releasing 10.3 for the legacy BB10 phones. (Z10, Z30, Q10, Q5 and even maybe Z3)

Is it because 10.3 will not be fully optimized? Or is it a hardware issue for this initial 10.3 OS with legacy devices?
As far as I understood, the Passport will be the only phone running 10.3

I'm running a hybrid version of 10.3.0.296/441, and as a beta OS it's laggy of course. Now I’m thinking about either waiting for a better release of 10.3 OR going back to 10.2.1

    what are your thoughts?

My first guess would be to promote sales for the passport

I've grown weary of .296 personally and will be installing .700 tonight...
There won't be another leak for quite awhile, so I suggest you do the same or go back to 10.2 if you want some change...

My guess is that they are pressed for time to get the 10.3 version up to snuff and to do so they have concentrated on passport only version for now.

The process is nothing new, but making the all-devices version a separate build series is a little different.

Usually an OS is developed for new hardware until it's release-quality for said new hardware (10.1.0.0 to 10.1.0.1483 for Q10, 10.2.0.0 to 0.2.0.1443 for Z30, 10.2.1.2500 to 10.2.1.2947 for Z3).

Then the developers apply fixes to the OS for overall improvements (10.1.0.1609 onwards for all devices, 10.2.0.1725 onwards for all devices, 10.2.1.3175 onwards for all devices).

Eventually every device in the market, including the ones that launched the new OS version, gets the improved OS version (10.1.0.1720, 10.2.0.1791, 10.2.1.3175).

They have to rework all applications for the different screen resolutions and have to improve them for the hardware. ... lol.
    obviously not.
since the developer firmware is running on z10, z30, q10 and q5.

That thurask said. They don't even have time to properly finish the UI for all the apps for 10.3, so even less time to get it right on the growing portfolio of devices.
And let's not forget that the Passport is using a new (for BB) SoC and GPU. They probably need to take some time to make sure everything runs fine on the older hardware.

Yeap, fine way to **** the remaining userbase. Excellent sales strategy. You want the 10.3? Go buy a new expensive phone (out of your pocket, cause we need the money).

Well, F 'n' U is what they are gonna get.

I'd prefer they do it this way. I'd rather a strong new phone on the market, than a phone that's been released with software that isn't suited to the hardware and then having to wait for an upgrade to the OS.

The Z10 came out in January 2013.

    I'm still getting OS updates.

September is a bit earlier than the two year mark for the Passport, but even when it's released my Z is still supported.

That's flat out awesome. 2 years of OS updates, 4 major revisions, all supported.

Good on BlackBerry. I don't know what your issue is, but I'll be the first in line for the Passport with support like this.
