I would strongly recommend using the built-in runtime and sideloading your apps with the debug token.

I tried doing that once and for me the process was multi layered and a tad bit complicated.
The first and only time I have ever sideloaded an android app was with the unlocked runtime.
I know that there are probably some major benefits of using the debug token.

For a layman, how does the experience differ in terms of app experience? (asking because I don't know)

I've been using the unlocked version without debug token simply because I don't feel like messing around with them. So far, all of my many Android apps work without any problems using the unlocked runtime.

Yes setting up the debug method for the first time can be a frustrating one but once you've done it it's very straightforward there after and imo worth it.

Based on my understanding and experience the debug token is used on the locked android runtime which is much more up to date in the latest leak vs the unlocked runtime which is quite a bit older and doesn't get leaked updates very often so any new features/fixes or performance enhancements BlackBerry make to the runtime won't be in the unlocked runtime unless there is an updated leak but based on what I have read there may not be another leak of a unlocked runtime.

Also with each updated locked android runtime, I have had apps start to work that didn't work before in a pervious runtime and all apps now open quicker and run much more smoothly so the updates BlackBerry make to the runtime help to improve the experience.

When using an app with the unlocked runtime if the app doesn't work there is still a chance it could work if the app is converted using the debug method, i have read that there are apps that do need the debug method to work plus I think it's good to get your own .apks direct from the play store to convert yourself to .bar vs .bar files you find online which could have been tampered with depending on where you get them.

The decision is yours but my vote goes to using the latest locked android runtime with the debug token method.

It's not that hard...read up on how to do it and give it a try, I did and happy happy. Took me a little while to get it right but if you can follow written directions and not be in a big hurry, it IS worth the effort. There are good instructions (print em) in these forums. "Android Pak " is what to get. Links to get the 2 csj files are in there too... put the 2 files in the folder, make the token with a simple drag n drop... presto! You're in business...
