Isn't there a pictured guide how to use Link to backup and restore on Blackberry's homepage?!

    I thought it is intuitive...
Think it is and also thought it was on the actual Link program on the PC - thought they had a separate "help" page on there.

I can open my documents Blackberry backup files and it lists all my backups (and past BBs bold, torch, and the z10, which it calls 2919.) Looks like its dated january 30, 2014, which would give me a good start, I can fill in what I lost since then, but, how long should the process take? its been circling for 2 to 3 hours now......
2-3 hours seems like an awful long time to restore your files. How big a file is it? BTW, you should back up at the very least, weekly, best is daily or a couple of times a week. Going 5 months with out backing up is asking for trouble.

I think it depends on how important files on your phone are and if it's your only device where you ie sync your emails.

I simply haven't the time to backup on a daily basis. In my case monthly and bevor flashing new OS seems adequate.

Don't forget you can't load a back up from a higher os, you should just grab a good leak like 2947 and load it and start fresh.

I'm almost afraid to ask .......how do I "grab a good leak like 2947 and load it and start fresh. " Keep in mind I just mastered pencil sharpening and thumbtacks...

Go to the link below, and download the correct file for your device,
Unzip the file and it will make an exe file, plug your phone into your PC and double click the exe file a loader window will open and load the os, unplug after the window closes and your device will reboot, set up like a new device,

okay I will try that as a last resort. I have noticed that my last backup file is 3.15 GB so maybe it does take a while to load/ restore. One more question - if I do the above, will I be able to restore any files using link? Or, will my restore chances be over once I install 2947?

Thanks so much for your patience and help

It's a higher os so you should be able to back up via link, but you could restore some bugs with it also, I would start it like a new device and start over,

The best option would be to just restore your media and then setup your ie accounts or apps from scratch.

It was the new update of BB Link that was causing the phone to not restore properly.

I uninstalled/installed fresh and it seems to be restoring my last backup file as I type this. After walking away from it for a while, it dawned on me that I had updated the link desktop program when I synced the phone before starting the whole dev/app 10. 3 download nightmare. Lesson learned.

Again, thanks to everybody that chimed in to help me here, I really appreciate the patience and promptness.

Do yourself a big favor and get a 16gb micro sd card and from now on before an update, backup and put everything important on the card. I screenshot important contacts and move those pics to the sd card and I dont lose anything anymore. Also if you had an almost full phone when you did the backup, takes four or five hours, sometimes longer. Once it took my BB 7 hours to restore a backup.
