    att doesn't support it.
You know I prefer to say it more accurately that ATT Service Books block this feature.

Of course they support it. Can you use Skype on ATT? Of course you can. That VOIP? Are you talking about the handoff of a call from internet to mobile? Here's a secret, most every "landline" in the US is now a VOIP line. The majority of Americans get their voice carrier along with their cable and internet from the same guys and their phones plug right into the same cable modem. Same with virtually all offices in the US. If you can call from a home phone connected to Xfinity cable systems to an ATT Z10 and versa visa - you can call from wifi using your ATT Z10. Same way rooted androids on ATT make wifi calls by using the TMobile Service Books.
The service is called IMS, and the carrier has to have IMS servers to support this feature. It is a REQUIREMENT. It's not just a VoIP call as you're trying to understand it...

Clearly me education on this subject is embarassingly lacking here. If the call is made over a wifi network, lets say Comcast, the call oroginated from the phone, is coded using the phone's software and hardware and sent over wifi through the internet like any other packet of data. This part seems clear to me. Unless I missed something here.

So it seems you are saying the handoff from internet back to a land line requires more than just a normal switching and routing that a standard packet of data would require, but must somehow be routed to and through an IMS server before it can go to the recipient's carrier?

Similar to BB data needing to run through the NOC? Again I don't see why that is necessary.

Unlike uma, ims will not hand off from wifi to the cell tower and vice versa
If u lose wifi during a wifi call, it will drop the call

Uma is hardware base, ims is software base

Yes. The only other domestic carrier to have true wifi calling is Cincinnati Bell. And, I believe, they piggy-back off Tmo. The best feature, at least for me, is it uses my stock cell #. Tmo has had this feature forever. UMA (as has been pointed out) required hardware on the phone. BBerry and a handful of Nokias ran it. Then they went to Kineto which dropped the hardware requirement, but also dropped the hand-off. But it allowed them to add it OTA to Android phones. Latest version runs on IMS.

Also, the first generation of Androids had UMA. Pointless side note, and I'm not sure why I bothered to mention it.

Oh, there were also some Samsungs that had UMA. (I only know these things because I was a sales rep at T-Mobile when they first implemented UMA.)

Yep. UMA ran over some screwball ports on UDP as well. It had serious problems if behind some NAT devices (routers, etc) but usually could be worked around -- if you could get the person responsible to allow it.

I never saw it promote a call up from Cell to UMA, but it would drop one from UMA to cell service.

IMS is SIP (naked VOIP) with a wrapper on it, basically, along with a whole host of other specifications and requirements to turn it into something that fits into the cell carrier model (SIP is just a transport and lacks all the niceties such as E911 capability through querying the phone for GPS location, billing support, etc.)

UMA required hardware support in the handset where IMS does not. IMS can theoretically promote and downgrade a call into and out of the cellular infrastructure but as far as I know there is no carrier doing that at present because the cellular infrastructure doesn't know how -- if you walk out of Wifi range the call will be dropped.

So what was the whole Kineto thing about? An IMS variant?

Kineto is one of the companies involved in the integration game between the various "worlds" in this regard -- traditional cellular infrastructure extensions into WiFi-based calling, etc.

T-Mobile WiFi Calling worked great under 10.1 but once I upgraded (and it surely is an upgrade pretty much in every other respect!) it stopped working on my Q10.

Any advice (aside from returning to 10.1.x) would be appreciated!

If you upgraded to 1047 the WiFi calling does NOT work on the Q10 due to lack of a compatible radio. It does work on the Z10 but you need to flash the 811 radio in order to make it work. There have been several posts/threads to this effect.

Need assistance, Gents. Have TMO MR 10.1.0.4633 and Hatax's extracted 10.2 WiFi calling app, set 911 location, but cannot enable WiFi calling in the app.

Can I load the 10.2 811 radio file on the OS to enable WiFi calling?

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Docfeed - I have seen those posts as well, which was why I was asking in this thread for any helpful advice!

I figured it was a non-zero possibility that someone had already come up with a kludge to lash some alternative Q10 radio code into a 10.2 install - and I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I am having the same issue with the switch toggle.
I just got off the phone with T-Mobile, and they told me that I needed to update my SIM Card from a UICC to a GMA SIM card in order for the WIFI feature to work. She also explained that the T Mobile WIFI App will be released at the end of the summer along with the 10.2 update. I believe the App that has been provided by HaTaX is the same one. I will be going to T-Mobile today to switch SIM cards, and report back.

People have been told by TMO to get the gma sim only to find out that it still doesn't enable wifi calling. Others have been told by TMO ( myself included when I called ) that another smaller update will come before 10.2 to enable wifi calling.
    Just saying.
