Nope - they in fact crash.

There's no reason to have it there as there are no code endpoints in the file. If there were then it could be as you described, but there aren't.

On the other hand if the intent is to prevent sideloading of GSF....
Installing a non-functional gsf to prevent sideloading it (actually pushing it to system, different than sideloading, can be done directly from the phone if rooted) would be redundant. The only way to push anything to system in android is to remount system as r/w, and currently root access is denied. If root access were to be gained, any attempts to prevent pushing anything to system would be pointless. BlackBerry has done a nice job of making it hard to gain root, with empty directories and files needed for root access being in the wrong place, such as tmp, normally located in /data/local, on our phones located directly in file system root.

Tmp is writable, in that you can copy the root files to it, but it won't allow you to change the permissions to execute the files, and once you reboot the phone they get deleted anyway. I've been trying for a week or so to figure out root access, so far no luck.

There is a new rooting program called kingo. It recognizes my Q10 as an Android device, but when I click root, I get an error message saying adb failed. If I can find a way around that, I think we can root.

If kingo works, there is almost no way that Google or BlackBerry can stop us from having Google services, because according to kingo, the exploit they are using is closed source, making it very difficult to patch. Ota official updates without worry and root again and again (hopefully).

What's with January 4th? I feel like I heard someone else bring it up before too. Is there a rumor or something?

I don't think Kingo will root bb10. It's not showing as a supported device.

It's not listed as a supported device because they haven't tested it. Doesn't mean it won't work. I've tried several other rooting programs, and kingo is the only one so far that recognizes the Q. It just gets an adb error, which there could very possibly be a way around. It's not that far of a stretch. The fact in itself that kingo recognizes the device is a positive sign.

Yeah, given that the hardware architecture and various other things are so different than a native Android device, I would be extremely surprised myself.

All I want is for gmail to run properly. If I can do that, I'm good. Read a thread about it, way too technical for me. Anyone help?

Gmail runs perfectly for me, it's really simple, load up these two apks: http://cloud.bb10.ch/public.php?serv...a9e67a0b1e2960 that's the latest google play services and login services, all you have to do is load them up, open the google account icon, set up your account or login and you're set. It'll work for gmail, play music, maps, ingress, voice(although apparently you can only call using your own number and not a google voice number) and a few more, some apps still say google play services is unsupported, but it's atleast something for now. You have to get gmail version 4.6 because 4.7 crashes as soon as you start it. We really don't need the play store, we have plenty of stores already that work just as well and snap makes the playstore available too anyway, but play services on the other hand is something we do need. So many more apps would work if we could just have access to it. Things feel very incomplete right now, but we'll have to wait and see where blackberry is going with this.

The ADB mentioned in the error is most likely the Android Debug Bridge which is most likely removed by BlackBerry so highly unlikely this will work

I downloaded gmail 4.7.1 from 1mobile, went to android settings and enabled syncing, and it works. Before I enabled syncing, it crashed.

But I'm still finding that notifications don't turn off for android apps by pressing a volume button, and when gmail is closed, I don't get a notification, so it's not that great.

I don't know if anybody already recognized this:
If you click in an android app on a link to another app in the play store the Blackberry World opens with a search string entered and started. Try it by opening the Google maps app and go to the menu left and click on Google Earth.

Might be an indication that Google play will be integrated in BlackBerry World?

Unfortunately, I'm not finding the gmail app to be better than BlackBerry native gmail support so far, mostly because of being unable to silence the notification, also if gmail is not left on active frame it does not notify at all until opened again, and I also have to keep my gmail account on the phone to keep my gmail contacts, so I may as well stick with this until a standalone email client is developed for bb10.
