I stupidly installed this latest leak without backing up. I lost all my contacts which are more important that other files. I do have an old OS7 backup file. Any way to restore contacts that way?
Also thought that installing this wouldn't get rid of any of my current data. Is this normal?

yes, that's normal. The easiest way is to use a cloud based email/contacts such as gmail/microsoft.com so that everything gets synced after os install. If you do an official blackberry install everything should be kept but there's always a chance things can go wrong so always worth doing backups.

You might be able to use a switch device type technique to get the data from your os7 backup, but I think you usually have to also have the old phone available too.

When you install leaks, they are usually in the form of the autoloader
When you run the autoloader, it is essentially reinstalling the whole system from scratch, like when you do a clean install of a PC or Mac
You will lose everything if you don't back up
IF you update OTA, this won't happen. Nor will it happen if you have bar files of the OS file and update via sachibar (now sachesi)
