I had OS 10.3.1.632 on BlackBerry Q5 installed and monitored network traffic on my perimeter firewall.

The device established communication with two unknown hosts on the internet:

    184.31.84.199
    2.23.177.205

Today I reverted to OS 10.2.1.2977 and the device only talks to Cell Phones, Smartphones & Mobile Phones from BlackBerry.com which seems to be Ok.

Does anyone know what is going on here?

The ip adresses you provided are from Akamai. (Damn postcount... may not paste a link...)

It is a company that does a lot of stuff in cloud technologies, so it looks likes BlkacBerry got some services or something else running at Akamai their servers.

It's BlackBerry's way to see who's running non-legit versions of their OS. Sort of like what Microsoft does.

Akamai optimizes and coordinates internet traffic by
hosting COPYs of the original websites, hosting
streaming media etc. for a "faster" delivery.

It's a so called Content Delivery Network (CDN).

There are 150.000 Akamai Servers in 92 Countrys
    with over 3500 customers like:
Adobe, Airbus, Apple, Audi, Blizzard, BMW, CNN, eBay,
Facebook, Logitech, Microsoft, NSA, Philips, Red Bull,
    Swarovski, XING, Yahoo...

    Akamai is not problem free:
To speed up downloading they host the orininal files, websites etc.
on their farming centers, and there are often problems by using SSL
    connections.
Because of the commercial being and very less transparency these
services are often associated with spyware. Many Adobe Installers
install these services in the background but don't tell you anything
    about an installation.

You have a firewall, then try to block it. I found out, that Akamai
servers are blocked by many filtering Programs and Hostfiles to
    protect privacy.
