I realize this is a pet peeve of mine, but the term "leak" refers to something being released to the wild that was never intended to be released. Think press leaks, think wiki-leaks, think the one early 10.3 build that the community got their hands on that BlackBerry had never intended for us to get.

People are throwing this term around about any OS they can get their hands on which is incorrect. A "leak" is NOT an officially released and distributed from the manufacturer version of something. That is a "release", not a "leak". Think the AT&T build that was just released, think the 10.2.1.2947 build for the Z3 that was released (albeit very early). If you can use Sachesi to find it on the BlackBerry servers and download it, then it has been "released" for some carrier/device combination.

So can we please stop calling the OS versions "leaks" that you can easily find and download on BlackBerry servers?

Again I realize this is a pet peeve of mine, but as someone who has being coding in one form or another for 20+ years this really annoys me.

I know the difference between a leak and an official OS but I call any OS I can install myself a leak. Whether it's an autoloader or sachesi it doesn't matter to me. I do this because I don't keep track of which OSs are actual leaks vs officials.

Sorry to add to your pet peeve but its just the way I see it and it makes it easier for me. Lol.

My biggest pet peeve is people that don't use their signal lights.

When most people say official they mean the carrier, a leak is anything that is not being used by a carrier ,

That's also my pet peeve. Especially if you are there waiting to turn out and don't as you see the car approaching. Then they turn down your side! Liken you have been waiting and could have turned had they used their signal.

    Yes, we digress. LOL

However, I understand where you coming from OP.

Ah but if said 'official' release is posted anywhere other than the carrier OTA update, BlackBerry themselves or official links you've technically leaked that release out from it's original sources

ie Autoloaders posted on mega for example and put on forums

In reality though just to clear up, yeah if it's officially released then it's not a leak and is a peeve of mine also but some users see a release on CrackBerry forums and do assume it's a leak, with the exception of those threads headed 10.2.1.xxxx from Sprint for example. Maybe the title '10.2.1.xxxx Official Release from Sprint' should be the heading to remove any doubt as to it's origin and release state.

Words matter to some and not to others. They do to me. CB forums is a place to learn so people may as well get it right. It is confusing to those less technically inclined who may be dissuaded from loading an official OS thinking it is some "leak" from a nefarious source.

^^This. I think the OP would help some new people on CB who have been holding back from upgrading their devices due to the line of thinking that all OS's being post here are leaks and not official.

I think most people that are scared of ( leaks) are just scared of doing it manually , they get nervous thinking they will brick there phone, so when it come via OTA they feel more secure, they might think because it's not OTA that it is a leak.

If a OS version is not delivered OTA from my carrier, I like to think of it as a Leak (even though i understand it technically isn't!

An OS leak is a Leak - got it
An OS release is a Release - got it

I think most of us get it, that said it makes for good practice to reinforce these terms whenever a newbie lands here !!

And I can't believe how many people call official releases leaks. User education is never a waste of time IMHO.

I would also argue that people need a new "release" bad, and not a leak. Most people don't want to put up with bugs or known issues (even if they say they will).

Then they would be incorrect to assume that just because their carrier didn't approve it that it's a "leak" only because another carrier somewhere approved it.

Again just trying to educate people and hopefully take the fear out of upgrading to newer official releases (even if their carrier didn't approve it...yet). :-)

If I remember what you are referring to, I think it has happened once...maybe twice. Like I think the CrackBerry community got their hands on a few OSs right before they were officially released.

I wouldn't call that "many times", it certainly hasn't happened in a while, nor does it change the point I am making.

I blame Chen for this thread. If he had not shut down the leak faucet we would have something important to talk about.

To quote Shakespeare, "a leak by any other name is just as sweet"

    Or something like that.
