Dang. I really don't know how else I tinkered with the phone. The original method works for me every time.

Here's some suggestions on top of the original method that I did before.
    1. Load Battery Guru in active frame first.
    2. While you are waiting for the Android runtime to load, close the app and re-open the Taskmanager app mentioned earlier. Close and re-open it a few times and finally let it load all the way.
    3. Using Ghost Commander app, goto applications and long press on a few android processes and select disable. I disabled PicoTTS, Android Live Wallpapers, Bubbles, Black Hole. Here's a screen shot of it disabled:

I'm going to try and restart my phone while loading other Android ports and messing around to see what I can figure out.

EDIT: Important! be careful before you go off disabling the android runtime apps. I broke my Runtime this way. Backup first!

Sigh, this does not work. There's a known intermittent bug where the bar disappears.

Disclaimer: I did not complete the 'scratch my arse' step as described. Not sure how important that is.

Update: after re enabling those android services the bar won't go away anymore. Disabling them doesn't work anymore either.
I'm going to keep them disabled for a while and see if it works again. Bummer.

Well, I crashed and broke my Android runtime disabling apps and services in it using Ghost Commander.

A word of caution: please do a backup before you mess with the runtime!

With that said, I think the key to removing the bar may lie within modifying the android runtime somehow.
