In fact, OS 10.0 was planned to be available for PlayBook and was tested for a long time, until Heins killed the project. By the way, the version that you posted refers to Android 2.3.3 Runtime, which is the current runtime of the PlayBook and the only runtime that could get at the time (the same as smartphones, it was the same OS 10.0). If in OS 10.3 we can find a reference to a 4.3 player for PlayBook, well that means someone in BlackBerry did change that code line, and I'm pretty sure that they didn't add it for joke. When OS 10 came out and was to be released for PlayBook, the Android 4 runtime did not exist, folk: that's the proof that it's a recent addition.
If you look for the same line in 10.2 OS'...you see the same thing, except it says "4.2.2", not "2.3.3"...all Thurask was saying is the PlayBook has been referenced in BB10 OS' since 10.0.10

Would a flat ui artwork be less taxing on the hardware than a more aero shadowy ui?? Could this be why bb10 *may* make an appearance on the pb??

And I agree with you. I'm only trying to say that OS 10 for PlayBook was officially cancelled by Heins. So if it's not coming to PlayBook of Chen's own will, why would they update that code line, if Android 4 Runtime has been available only since the recent release of OS 10.2 (that is after OS 10 for PlayBook was, in theory, more than dead)? It should have remained 2.3.3.

I don't think that a flat UI actually makes difference, the "problem" is Cascade, I think, and the multitasking.

Since the 10.3 version leaked is an early developers build, maybe they are testing it out on the PB. If it goes well, maybe they will keep pursue it.

Maybe it's just there for reference for the bridge app?

Not proof. Any coder worth their salt knows that constantly reused code whould be a declared variable so you only have to change it once in the declarations to carry it through all code. This is likely what we are seeing here. Variable updated, carries throughout code, shows up in config file, means nothing. Just my thoughts.

Now that BB10 is now just being refined vs. building from virtually scratch, you have to wonder where all the resources were shifted to. Hope this comes true!
Unfortunately I think may were laid off .

Flat UI makes a huge difference in both CPU and GPU usage. Look no further than Windows 7 and Aero. Turn that "feature" off and system stabilizes, resources are freed up, and the machine runs much smoother. There is a reason the GPU requirements to run Aero exist. Same principle.

Even if this is only an update to the Android Runtime and all we get is 4.2.2, I can see Snap being made available soon after, and our playbooks (Even on a Sub 10.0 OS version) will have access to the Google Play Store.

Whatever it is. I recently dusted off my playbook. The yearning I have for that tablet to be re-vitalized is... well, it's just damn pathetic at times.

Hoping Chen knows what he's doing...

If an updated and unlocked android runtime plus snap is all we would get then I would be happy. No reason why they can't do this at the very least. I know that I *could* just go buy an inexpensive android tablet, but the PB is still perfectly good and works well. I small update like enhancing the android player would go a long way.

I hate the whole "retina" thing. It is a made up term by Apple to sell their products. According to the requirements for a retina display my Z10 has one at 356 PPI and the requirement is 326 PPI for smaller devices. Yes you are correct the PlayBook does not have a retina display but the term is crap IMHO.
Ding ding ding,we have a winner!

The fundamental difference between Apple and BlackBerry - Apple upmarkets their technology, BlackBerry downmarkets their technology. Both practices **** me off to no end.

This is the same reason you pay an arm and a leg for already outdated components when you buy a "top of the line" Mac. But then again, alien garbage cans must cost a lot to build...

Will it happen? No clue. But you can not go off what the ex ceo said.

    Or even an existing one....

While I'd love to see a version of BB10 on the PlayBook with enough headroom for apps to work.... I'd really hate to know that BlackBerry is wasting time trying to ride a dead horse.

No, you need to be connected to a charging source before you can perform updates. :P

LOL! Needs a charge first. Please leave Playbook plugged in while updating. This update will take approximately 4 years...3 years 364 days and 23 hours to wait for the files, 45 minutes to update, and 15 minutes to reboot...LOL!

Now, BlackBerry is developing a new tablet or wants to. Everyone knows how playbook has gone... if they just support it after 4 (four! ) years the perception of BlackBerry brand in tables market would be better! This is what I think but, hey, I'm not a marketing guy :-P

It makes sense to revisit the tablet market now. The playbook was fundamentally a very well built unit, and BB10 is now a mature, well designed OS. Implementing it on a Playbook would be relatively quick and easy, and if we think back to the reasons the Playbook wasn't well recieved, I feel none of those would be a problem anymore - provided BB can fully work around the Google Services issue.

Plus, keeping with the original PB form factor would allow existing accessories to be used again - I would absolutely love it if my *ahem* five different cases would be useable again, plus my charging cradle, quick charger, premium charger, HDMI cable...you get the picture!

Yup, there's a ton of leftover code in the OS'.. could very well just be broken hopes and dreams.

Conversely, if you are optimising your code, why would you continue to persist in leaving redundant lines of code there?

Well BlackBerry doesn't exactly have a robust pipe of new handsets to work on. So maybe they can work on getting bb10 to work on PlayBook. It would allow them to put the OS on other cheap products, so it wouldn't just be a PlayBook thing.
