On my Z10, to perform a hard reset you had to hold the volume keys until the squircle appears....did that many times. Are you saying that this is different on the passport?

    Mine is at 3.34GB.

There have been many theories advanced on this subject, but BlackBerry has never (to my knowledge) come out and defined what falls under the "System" umbrella.

Some people believe that not all android app storage is counted under the app itself.

I am pretty sure all accounts that store information in the Hub show up as System as well.

A long time ago I created a thread on this subject and found that OneDrive was stuck trying to sync a 4GB video from my device up to OneDrive. Once I removed it, the system of System dropped down by 4GB (or something like that. So there is another possible reason, pending sync data.
Edit: here is the thread http://forums.crackberry.com/showthread.php?t=924988

I think the best you can do until BlackBerry gives us a better view into that bucket of Satan, is to try removing all your accounts and apps, reboot your device to get it to properly refresh the storage, and then try adding them all back in one at a time and watch what happens to system. I suggest reboots in between each change because my experience from the OS 10.1 days was that was the only way to force a true update to the reported storage. Maybe things are better in 10.3.1 and this isn't necessary anymore.

The thing is that on 10.3.1.2552 it was 2 gb. Right after the 2582 update it jumped to 4.5!!! That's y I don't understand what happened and looking all the 2582 threads.

No, on my Z30 I've never had to hold them that long. I think that is a myth started by some members.

Edit: I've always only held them until the screen went black.

The system size increase is caused by doing non-destructive updates. For some reason the BlackBerry10 upgrading technique keeps a lot of extra stuffles.

Same here, but on my Passport I'm in no danger of running out of room so I have no incentive to fix it :P

I believe in the past using an Autoloader or using Sachesi to manually reinstall (so non-destructive) each system bar would fix it I think, I don't really remember :/

    Agreed.

BTW I had option to get passport but I wanted a Z30 since I had a Z10. Now maybe full touch passport.

It does seem to work different on the Passport. I learned the hard way to only hold now until 'BlackBerry' appears and then let go.

On a side note, I've always did a hard reset by holding down the power button and not the up and down volume keys. Is there any difference?

Out of curiosity, if you hold the buttons down through the splash screen, does it move onto the squircle loading screen? I've never had a Z30. Just wondering why they would function differently for the same process.

I can't say for sure if there is or not. Many here tend to believe there is a difference. More like a ctrl, alt, del key combo.

I'll give it a try. That just seems like you're holding them to reboot it again after it already has lol.

I guess that is how I differentiated between powering off the device and doing the hard reset...of course I probably determined that from a previous thread as you eluded to earlier. The unexplained mysteries of life, I guess. Thanks for humoring me.

You mean the first time the splash screen comes up when it's shutting down or when it comes up after the loading squircle would already be done loading?

When it's restarting. On my Z, you (can) hold the volume keys all the way through the shut off, through the restart and through the splash screen. I didn't release until the squircle started loading.

Passport will go through the same process until the splash screen on the restart.

When I first got my passport, I used to hold the volume keys until the loading circle appears and then I would let go. Now something changed, if I keep holding the volume keys only the "blackberry" keeps reappearing on the screen and when I let go, the device starts to boot with the loading circle. Some of my other friends with a passport still get loading circle while depressing the volume keys. I asked Darcy, and he said there is no difference. Power is still cut. And the same process occurs. So I'm fine with it.

Here's mine. I've done nothing but nondestructive Sachesi upgrades since November when I first got the Passport. No autoloader after the first upgrade to 10.3.1 the first day.

Somehow I thought the old stuff was automatically cleared after a while. After all, the official upgrades are meant to be done OTA, which is essentially the same as Sachesi, isn't it?

Yupp, it seems the non-destructive updates leave residue OS laying around :/

Oh well, luckily not too big of a problem on most BlackBerry10 phones, though it's definitely something BlackBerry should be looking into :s

One thing to note: the OS seems to cap around 4.7gb, no matter how many OTA updates you've done. It doesn't seem to go higher, so there should be some sort of cleanup going on after installs, just curious as to why it doubles the OS size when updating vs autoloading :/

I did the non-destructive Link update on the Z30 and System sits at 2.72 GB. Maybe Link does it cleaner? I've noticed that people have been reporting that it's only taking minutes to OTA update. For me,

10.2.1.2156 to 10.3.1.1581 (1 GB) took 2.5 hours via Link
10.3.1.1581 to 10.3.1.1767 (80 MB, Z30 specific release) took 30 minutes via Link
10.3.1.1767 to 10.3.1.1784 (780 MB) took 30 minutes via Link

Very interesting to read that. I've read this lots of times in the iPhone forums that it's better to not do the OTS update and instead it's better to use iTunes to update to the latest. Maybe it's the same with BlackBerry and link.

Also I though Link was destructive. How do you perform the update none destructive via link?

I chose to use Link because my ShopBlackBerry Z30 saw the update right away with Link, while Software Update check would continue to say "busy". Also, Link update uses less memory to install, whereas OTA requires 2.5X the size of the update file (according to BlackBerry).

With Link, you can Update or Restore the OS. I just did a check for updates and installed from there.
