I'd love a better voice assistant mainly for the bluetooth I use on my helmet when riding

    Features I'd like to see:

Read back text messages, such as last received etc

Change songs or search for a specific song or artist and play that song

Auto launch programs, such as Blackberry maps and let me input a destination

I was sick last Friday, and having realized I didn't own a thermometer, I wanted to save a reminder to myself to buy one. Took three tries to get it right, and the first two were the same:

BlackBerry Assistant in 10.3 - better than Cortana from Microsoft?-img_20140328_205325.png

    Third time worked:

She says "Eff" for the F*** words. I lol. I'd pay extra to unlock swear words.

I can see uses for an always-on digital assistant like what is available on the Moto X. For example, if I'm busy cooking dinner after getting in from work and I spontaneously decide to invite someone over, I don't have to wash my hands to pick up my phone and start dialing or texting. I simply say "Hey phone?" "Yes J?" "Text Andrea." "What would you like to say?" "Hey, any dinner plans?" ... "Message sent. Read reply on arrival?" "yes please."

2 minutes later, reply comes in and not only does it know to read the reply right away (be it contextual, it knows you are busy, or like in the example given it has asked and you have confirmed you would like the reply read out to you), but it also knows that when you say "reply...", you're talking about that same message, even if some other email or IM comes in at the exact same time. Sorta like Jarvis out of Iron Man, but for the every day person and in a phone rather than a suit.

Do I hope that the BlackBerry assistant is the smartest one yet? Oh goodness yes. Do I expect it to be? Not really, I kinda expect it to perhaps be on par with or slightly above Siri in its current form.

This said, they do need to take a page out of Google Android's dictation method and actually put text in as you are talking. This way you know exactly what words it isn't catching properly, and can fix things a bit faster, making voice dictation a lot more friendly. I actually prefer voice dictation on my Android tablet over my BlackBerry at the moment, though for most messaging the BlackBerry still trumps any other platform I have used to date.

I dont use any assistent because none of them supports Czech, so I dont really care.

My opinion is that BB alternative wont be as good as Microsoft Cortana.

BB doesnt have money, doesnt have resources, doesnt have any *real* ecosystem.

Still the people that use iPhone (S) with Siri, love it--my wife included! Siri is so far advanced that its kind of scary. On the newest iPhone 5-S, the program carries on an intelligent conversation with the person using it. I read a while back that Apple collects every question that Siri is asked and adds it to the program, making it an actual learning AI--amazing to me and none of the other look-alikes work as well as Siri does. I'd love Apple to license it out to BB! Now your talking!
Before the Q10, I used iPhone 5 for 9 month, siri is by far the most annoying thing. It is just pathetic to talk to a phone. All of my friends use iPhones, I never see any of them use siri.

I often use voice assistant for read and reply to messages while I'm walking down the street with headphones. Since I wear a holster it's annoying to take the phone out from under my jacket and type so I just bring up the voice assistant with my earphones and tell it to read my last message, then I reply. Works quite well, also I use it in my car with blue tooth for finding directions and calling ppl.

Which is why their BB10 phones have such crappy keyboards.

I think a voice assistant is pretty cool. I use Touchless Controls on my Moto X a lot so, Cortana is some nice competition. Here's hoping BlackBerry can offer something pretty cool in virtual assistants.

Hi everybody, I'm new in the blackberry family. I love bb10 OS, i'm very excited waiting for 10.3 with BlackBerry assistant. But tonight, seeing Microsoft presenting his Cortana during build 2014, I just can't imagine how BlackBerry could not be another time too late in the race :'(
    What's your opinion ?
PS: Sorry for my English, i'm french.

One thing that the BlackBerry solution will support is "always-on voice commands", like on the Moto X. It only works on recent hardware (Z30+)

I never use mine but that doesn't mean Blackberry should stop working on it, the reason why I don't use it is because its kinda rubbish really.

Some tasks are just easier doing manually.

That's when miracast comes in handy, nothing like watching two people in love go at it on a 80" 4K TV, not that I have a 4K TV, but when I an in a retail store, man oh man is it a good time.

I sure hope so, however, to my understanding, only internal BlackBerry employees know.
In the leaked 10.3 (very, very, early build...) it doesn't work, at all.
We have to play the waiting game.
It was working for me for awhile, and it actually worked fairly well. It understood me pretty clearly. Unfortunately I tried some things (reinstalling 10.3 among them) to try and bring back NFC and Bluetooth, but I surrendered when I couldn't get them to work properly and later noticed the voice control wasn't working. Didn't bother messing with it to try and bring it back since I didn't use it that often.

And this one was "What's the population of the United States?"

I don't think I would use it out in public. I make fun of the people I do see try to use Siri in public and having to repeat themselves several times.

However, I could maybe see myself using it in the office to add reminders and make appointments...one day lol

I can't imagine BlackBerry to propose "always-on voice commande" due to the necessity of a mic always on, that could be very risky for security.

I'm still waiting to see actual statistics on how many people actually use voice assistants. IMO, it's a thing for now but will die off eventually or evolve. I'd prefer to use something like that at the evolved stage, not early adoption.
Hey Bla1ze--hope you are doing well buddy! Do any of the Android voice assistants work on a Q10? I see "Moto X" mentioned a lot and I heard they had one that was every bit as good as Siri. Just curious if you know. Thanks Buddy!

Moto X makes Siri look like a joke.

Just think of an assistant that doesn't just understand better and attached to Google Now. Best voice assistant and be overall assistant. It's so good that it's creepy. Look up Google Now videos, it's nuts.
You walk into a restaurant and a coupon just pops up on your phone without you even touching it.

no google services work on BB10 but if one day they find a loophole, I can't see it ever working as effectively as it does on android

All blackberry needs to do is tie in their Universal search with always on voice controls. Make a nice interface, for online (try to get google cards like google now has)

Our universal search, I personally think is better then any platform but it is incredibly under rated and under used within the OS.
