So I am trying to side load couple apps which either fail to sideload or they do and dont open. I tried to check the app compatibablity on the blackberry developer website and they claim that the compatibilty error of these app is that they rely heavily on google maps which I have successfully side loaded as well but I guess the apps I side loaded can't utilize side-loaded google maps. Does anyone know if there is a workaround that? I read something yesterday about an app for instagram that lets it use android keyboard and I was wondering if you could do similar things with maps ?

I too have tried to research this here on crackberry.com it all started when I was trying to use the maps function in Instagram, however is says that it needs the Google maps android api. I'm sure someone can extract the maps api and then we can take advantage of it.

What the problem is is that you require a few shells, doorbells, basically to call on the google maps api
Having sideloaded Google maps, you only access it within the app itself. The other programs have no means to call onto google maps api. As far as I know, it isn't possible to install/sideload these shells to enable the calling of these api

Keyboard is different. You are essentially installing a keyboard, which you can do on any other android phone/platform
Installing a shell so that other programs can recognize an api is different. Usually this is already in the platform and isn't sideloaded. Unless you can gain root access, I'm not sure you can do this. Even if you have root access, which you don't, I'm not fully certain how this would work either. That would be a question for sacha IF we ever manage to root LOL

I'm having the exact same issue regarding two apps that I wish to side load. I too would be very interested to hear of any way of getting these apps working.

Actually, some of my apps have no problem launching Google Maps when required.

    Hi all,

API for Google Maps (and others) are not implemented in the Android Runtime on BB OS10. If an app calls an unsupported API it crashes.

For a full list of unsupported API's refer to: https://developer.blackberry.com/and..._features.html

The most widespread "issue" with app porting from Android is calls to Google Maps. It seems that about 95%+ apps is has some calls to Google Maps API. Second most seen issue is calls to native code.

Some apps actually never calls the Google Maps API (or does is some very well hidden place in the app) so the app seems to run fine.

BlackBerry is balancing between getting many apps and forcing developers to make native apps. If they allowed everything from Android to run, there would be not reason to develop anything BB 10 specific.

If BlackBerry would emulate the Maps API's (and just use their own mapping solution) it could work. There might be legal or political issues preventing it though.

Thanks jpvj! So do you know of a way in which the google maps API can be packaged into a shell file or whatever format necessary and installed/side loaded? Or away to edit those apps to use the blackberry maps or google web view instead?

Unfortunately by not supporting the Google Maps API, Blackberry users can't use apps like Uber and Hailo.

Apart from Pocket Informant, call-me-a-cab apps are the ones I miss most on BB10 and are fast becoming necessary for living in large cities.

Agreed. It's pretty frustrating to not be able to use lyft, uber, or sidecar anymore and having to actually call a real cab. I've probably saved hundreds of dollars by using those services. I've tried side loading all of them but all require the Google maps api

Google Maps within apps is possible, guys! Check out my thread on http://forums.crackberry.com/bb10-an...orking-862184/
There's no tool or script for one click fix (while something like this is possible) so it's couple of steps to patch. Stay tuned while I'm finishing polishing and testing for the later coming apk's/bar's.

Trying out fixed lyft on my Q10:
