Will it be easy for BlackBerry to update the 4.2.2 runtime to 4.3 when Android 4.3 is released? I just don't want to get left behind in Android versions AGAIN. Most apps will only require 4.0, 4.1,4.2, and 2.0 but, those with with code from 4.3 will be a problem, right? It's taken a long time for them to update from 2.3 to 4.2 so will it take as long to go from 4.2 to 4.3? Both 10.2 and 4.3 are due around the same time-- early fall.

how many apps do you know is running on 4.1+ (jelly bean only) in the google play store? Keylime 5.0 would be the only real jump I think

I think they will be alright after 10.2. I think this update is the one that going to take them the longest because its got the most bug fixes and additional features in it.

It won't be an issue for a very long time, and nothing to worry about. I can guarantee you that the major app developers will not release apps that require Jelly Bean 4.3 any time soon.

I wouldn't worry about it. Put yourself in a developer's shoes. 99.99% of Android phones are 4.2.x and lower. Why lower your target audience? As someone else has already said, I would think the next big jump would be KLP.

Is the whole point of supporting 4.2.2 to handle enterprise apps written for Android? It's clearly not to support fans of sideloading.

I think you all is missing the point, the question is will BlackBerry have problem upgrading to a newer runtime when it is available?? if it is 4.3 or 5.0 ( is there going to be an easy method to just upgrade it?)

It's to improve support for all apps, not just enterprise? Side loading, and all android ports in BBW

New framework, new UI guidelines, etc. Its not that there will be new APIs but a lot will be updated to better support hardware etc

Two thirds of Android users are gingerbread or older. So I think it says a lot that BlackBerry is able to better support android than the android phone makers themselves. 4.2 should be more than enough for mid future with regards to app support and features.

PS. I can't wait to get 4.2 runtime on my BlackBerry and then go make fun of the majority of Android users that I have a more recent version of android on my BlackBerry than they do on their Android device.

I just checked and 4.0.3 and up is the highest I found

    Source: https://play.google.com/store/search...e&c=apps&hl=en

But in all seriousness, I personally don't think it's a big jump just like it was from 2.3.3 to 4.2.2. Most of the "newer" android devices doesn't even have 4.2 or the owners haven't even heard about it yet. From what I've been reading it just seems like a M.R. more then anything else (obviously could be wrong here:P). Blackberry's technology is getting better and better for this android runtime it seems. 4.2 came out in March I believe and we had it in June (Beta obviously). I personally don't think the apps will be running any smoother, better or have different APIs until 5.0.

After all that, my answer would be: I don't think it will take much time at all if they even care to implement it since the difference (from what I read) will be pretty small. I'd give it 2 months tops after 4.3 released realistically. In my mind, I'd give it a month

They decided to make the 10.2 Runtime to be 4.2, after they announced it would be 4.1, and there obviously was a reason for that. Either to stay updated, or they thought there was no difference.

Given the jump from 2.3 to 4.2 I would doubt they would go to 4.3 right away. I wouldn't see much of a point either, since very few apps are going to want to target 2% of the Android market.

I'm sorry, what? BlackBerry 10 has only been on the market 5 months and they are ALREADY upgrading from 2.3 to 4.22.. I'd hardly call that a long time..

Also they jumped from 2.3 right to 4.22.. as others have said I would expect them to skip 4.3 and go straight for 5.0 IF they update again.

I know it's been said, but 5.0 would probably be the next logical jump.

*Looks like 4.3 has been revealed. Not sure what impact that has on 5.0 development. I guess with the amount of fragmentation android has that they are probably not in a hurry to release 5.0 anyway

It would be more logical to move to 4.3. Less work and there should be little compatibility issues.
