Let's see... If I were wanting to shut BlackBerry down, I would:
    1. Have zero marketing
    2. Let carriers determine my destiny
    3. Limit news of upcoming devices or software to the general public, perpetuating the same old BlackBerry myth
    4. Maintain premium pricing for handsets and BES/MDM services
    5. Let someone else run my app store
    That about covers it.

On a few of those points - remember that there are no new devices to market at the moment. The Z3 is in only one part of the world, and while I have no idea what kind of marketing there is for it, it seems to be selling well.

New devices for the rest of the world is still months away. Even Apple and Samsung don't make formal announcements until just days, if not the day, before release.

In fact, Chen showing off the two devices recently so far ahead of release, is actually a pattern that BlackBerry has always followed. Only BlackBerry talks about their devices months, to almost a year, ahead of release.

See previous first announcements for the Z10, the PlayBook, the 9100, among others. Chen's following the same, I think, expose-your-product-to-your-competitors-too-soon mentality.

Your joking right? Blackberry has been until very recently (Passport hardware and software) years behind the competition since 2008/2009. No one in the market cared what BB was doing. Did you see anyone try to copy the storm or Storm II's push screen? No. Did you see anyone try to copy the plastic screen of the 9850? No? What about the shared 256 megs of memory for app storage, operating and RAM? No? In the words of Teddy M - "Come ON!"

Does anyone actually know how BlackBerry controls the leaks? Are they logged as to who gets them within BlackBerry? Seems to me it's the only way to control it and trace back to someone. The pin watermarks are obviously not meant to do that. Just wondering.

Again, I don't care about the source. Should stop at the word "source". Doesn't matter who leaks it. As bla1ze said earlier, be happy with getting it.

It is about how BlackBerry controls access to pre-release OS software. It the past, it seems BlackBerry made autoloaders available for download or were otherwise distributed. Once one if those got in the wrong hands of a carrier partner or someone else, it could be leaked.

Now it seems that BlackBerry is not distributing autoloaders anymore. Devices are white listed by pin. They get software updates over the air and not through an autoloader.

This is just a theory. I have no first hand knowledge.

But, the lack of leaks suggest that leaks have been plugged.

What's any of that got to do with the post I quoted, or my response.

If it had to do with my thought that BlackBerry has released info about their products way too early, look at all the little features that we keep saying iOS or Android is copying from BlackBerry before we actually get them on BlackBerry, but are shown off months ahead of time.

I'm not talking about whole device hardware and the specs, I'm am talking about little OS features than are slowly picked up by others and touted as "incredible new features".

That's what I meant. Yes, I mentioned some hardware, but those usually came with new OS updates too.

It will "always" be a secret. Who knows how many times it will be handed off to key individuals before/if and/or when the rest of us will see it. I'm sure the process has changed somewhat. But, I'm a bit concerned when ppl ask that question. A lot of ppl ask or want to know. I don't know.......and IMHO, the mystery should remain intact. With Chen trying to shut them down......anyone asking may cause a few eyebrows to go up, or down, or hell,.....maybe uncross a few eyes. Seriously, the ones that do know are not going to give you a straight answer. I dont......and never asked.

@blacklatino fair enough answer, more or less just wondering how it could be "locked" down. Someone in software devel would know ways of it. Nothing sneaky.

Chen and company should be glad for the leaks, and getting these software updates out as quickly as they seem stable in the barn... why? Because we are the beta testers - out here in the wild, we can make the OS do things that their people will never ever think of...

Just look at Microsoft... look how they release software - crappy, crappy software... that slowly gets better as the complaint reports come in. We're willing to put these pre-release OSs on our phones, and be their guinea pigs - for free - and give them legitimate, real time updates on what we think about their OS...

They are really missing the boat here...
