With so many changes I keep wondering what it would be like if we ditched the text below the icons. Do we need it? Do we like it? Would it help if someone borrowed our phone and wanted to find the right app or see what we had? Could it make more room for larger icons or more tiles per page?

Generally, I think once I install an app I know what it looks like and can find it.

What's your opinion? I'm not great at photoshop but I would be curious what it might look like.

We definitely need the text if you ask me... especially with icon design moving away from the 3D shapes of what it resembles in the real world to a bunch of flat one colour circle with a white shape inside it..

Great for user interface, but not so great for user experience(ux).

My opinion is let users decide whether to have text or not.

Yes. Some icons, not app icons, I don't have a clue what it does until I touch it to see or look it up. At least have a Hoover feature where you cam see what it is for without setting it into action.

We are speaking as techs (or advance users). The everyday Joe or someone coming from a different platform may not be as knowledgeable as you. So, I would say leave the texts to every app/icon on your device. It really doesn't pick up that much room. My $0.02...

I need the text label - else how do I know what I am looking at? And no, I forget how icons look and what they mean.

It's hard to say. A LOT of testing would need to be done to see how people react to it. The smartphone industry is so commonplace now, the skeuomorphism we used to use is no longer needed and WP7 has already stripped a lot of the text out from icons. The fact is we don't need glossy icons, 3d icon representations of household objects, and (damn right we don't need) type writer click sounds and animations. iOS 7 already ditched most of it and I just wonder how far that trend can go and if someone can get ahead of the curve; if for the better.

I like this idea, not sure how it would work. Good input though.

Very true, I think an option would need to be put in to turn it back on. Maybe this idea is better as a tweak not a default setting...

The phone would still know what the app is called. I wouldn't suggest we make BB world all icons and you just scroll till you see an icon that looks good haha

I like the ideas and feedback. I don't think this would ever get baked in or be all that worth it but good to spitball the idea.

It has been answered with possibility to turn ON/OFF for the text below icons I think.

Everybody has their own device and for sure have their own preference. Let alone our short fuse level of 'boringness' in 1 day or a week perhaps we want it without text, the next day or week we might think: ...hmmm this gets boring, let's switch the look of our home screen with text under those icons! ,

Awful idea - not only has there been massive tax money spent on teaching me how to read and write and I'd like to put that skill to use, but it's bad enough having to interpret some dumb, non-intuitive app name to go along with some dumb, non-intuitive icon. With both I have a better chance remembering just what the hell it means by ciphering the combo.
You want icons? Go work the register at McDonalds.

Thinking about the less advanced users I know and this would be a disaster.

I've seen people reading what the buttons do on their TV remote despite the fact they've been using the same remote for years. Just icons and no text isn't enough for a large group of users.

Keep the labels default but an option to hide them wouldn't be bad at all.

Yeah, the text looks horrible, get it out of the screen. And get out the icons too, because without icons the screen will be more clean.

I'd like to see it as an option.
I use Chrome browser on my laptop and love it that my bookmarks bar is just icons without text. And hated it that IE didn't allow that (in Chrome I go to rename bookmarke name and just delete all and leave the field empty, IE doesn't allow it)

I think purists like me would make use of it (though I can see myself doing it for frequently used apps only)
