I have a Z10 with 10.3.1.632 loaded. I've sideloaded the "Octopus" app from Google Play just to see if the NFC function works. So far, as far as I can tell, it doesn't. Can someone let me know if that's their finding too?

That sideloaded apps CANNOT use NFC?

The app lets me use the phone as payment card for a ton of things, especially the transit system.

According to New in this release - 10.3.x - Runtime for Android apps - BlackBerry Developer NFC is now supported from Android apps. There might be some requirements you have to verify, but good to see BlackBerry improving the Android compatibility.

Also note Android 4.3 is the new runtime version.

    Installation method is not relevant.

They improving improving android for you and what?
We have os 10 that not ready, not optimised. They need to think again where should be menu at the top or bottom "3 dots " etc. Leave them alone with your Android

The app requires to read the Octopus card, which then gets authenticated so your phone can act as a payment card as well.

But on 10.3.1.632 loaded with Snap, I'm stuck on the initial NFC reading of the Octopus card.

Doesn't work for me still. Although I don't have another NFC tag except for the Octopus card so can't really test out too well.

NFC doesn't work for me at all on 10.3.1. tried to transfer somethings from my Z30 (10.3) to my Z10 (10.3.1) using NFC and just kept getting error messages.

I tried several Android NFC apps, and could not find any that worked. I found an app on BBWorld called TAGO, which seems to work pretty well. It's nice and simple, and seems capable and stable. It can write NFC tags too. I'm fairly new to the world of NFC, but so far, TAGO has been able to do everything I've asked it to. It worked on my Z10 with BB 10.2.x.xxx and 10.3.1.938, and its working fine on my Z30 with 10.3.1.1016.

Just saying I'm on a Z10 and NFC never worked well for me.
I cannot transfer anything to another device, haven't been able to for as long as I've known.
Could be the contact points are broken or the chip not sure.

Hmm, it does sound like you may have a hardware issue. I must say that my initial foray into the NFC world, was with the native "Smart Tags", and that wasn't very successful at all, which is why I went looking for an alternative. I do remember being able to transfer files between devices using Smart Tags without any problem though.

I agree that NFC doesn't seem to work within the Android Runtime. I just hope BlackBerry is aware of this and is fixing it ...
