I have noticed that since installing 10.2 a few weeks ago the charging rate is inconsistent. Even when using the PlayBook charger the rate will slow down and sometimes take 4 hours plus to fully charge the device. Sometimes the charging will totally stop for a period of time even though the lightning bolt is still flashing on the battery level indicator. Have seen a few other people have this problem as well. I wonder if it is device specific... is it just a STL100-1 issue? hmmmm....

Maybe it's the version you're on? I'm not experiencing that. But I'm not on an -1.

I've noticed this, but only if I reboot the phone *while* it's connected to the charger. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it goes back to normal speed. (I love that Battery Guru actually tells you the power levels. Otherwise, I probably never would have figured that out.)

I suspect thermal management is the "issue" here.
If the battery gets too hot the charging rate is reduced.

At least my 10.2 charging rate isn't he sane as ever. However on holiday I was playing a game on my phone which would produce significant drain and heat up the phone - the charging rate dropped.

Detlev, that's it. Thermo protect. It should tell all these people that they are doing something detrimental to their phones and batteries. Everyone please use standard charger. Only use a Playbook Charger on a phone in an emergency. Getting your batteries hot time after time is no good for them...gosh, how many times can you overheat anything before it breaks?

P.S. There is no charging bug in 10.2...did I have to say that?

Well, kind of relating to the title of the thread...
My Z10 isn't recognizing being plugged into my (other) car using a usb to cig adapter and cable and won't charge. A restart fixes the issue but not sure where to start... cable,USB adapter, car, OS...? Anyhow it's not a big deal but thought I'd report it here.

You are making assumptions here. Who says the battery is hot? The phone is only capable of charging at approx 1.2 A max no matter how powerful a charger you connect (1.8A PlayBook charger)... my battery is under 90 degrees when it fluctuates from 1.2A down to .20A quite randomly.

Just a hunch, but I suppose 10.2 brought a change in the way charging is recognized. I say this because apps like Battery Guru and Neutron had problems with 10.2.

Buy a Blackberry Premium Charger from Amazon. They charge your Playbook and Phone at the same time...I have 3. They work well. If you plug in your phone it will charge it at a faster rate than the stock wall charger and won't get it too hot.

Yeah.. if the phone is warm, then the charging rate drops. I just unplug it and replug after 5 mins.. It works perfectly.

I have exactly the same issue, and it only appear when I am on 10.2, and it is not a thermoprotection of any kind, because if I unplug the phone then reput the plug immediately again the charging rate increases again to more than 1000mA and can continue at this rate till battery is fully charged.
    10.2 is definitely the culprit.

Crabamer, are you sure you aren't bypassing thermal protection? Let us know if you burn up your battery or your phone prematurely okay?

Well battery temp is normal as reported by different apps showing battery temp, also I must say that the issue is present even when I use the charger provided with the phone, instead of charging using the 700mA, rate is much less most of the time and charging takes like 4 hours at least with 10.2 using the original charger.

Thermal protection will limit charge power as you approach 100F and shut it off at somewhat over that temperature. This is GOOD, not bad, as thermal runaway is something you never want to have happen in a lithium battery pack.

I have had my Z10 not charge when plugged in but that turned out to be a bad cable..... the two data pins were shorted (expecting a "Type B" charger) but no power was coming down the wire. Replacing the cable fixed that.....

The issue I know DOES occur on 10.2 is that if the phone is on charge, either thermally or charge-state limits (e.g. shifts to non-fast-charge) and then undergoes a heavy load it will not go back into "high rate" charge mode without being unplugged and re-plugged. It WILL go back into low-rate (500ma) mode, but if you have the GPS up or similar things that draw more than 500ma you lose battery capacity even though you're connected to power.
