My friend keeps getting texts that are from my number that I did not send that has a link to a porn site. How could this happen?

Are you sure they are from your number. If you go into your text messages and search your sent messages can you see them ? If they are directly sent to your friend from one of the sites on the shady side of town did you perhaps land on one of these sites by accident. might be worth changing your number as it's now being used in this way against your will , just some thoughts. Hope you get it sorted out.
On another thought does anyone else have access to your phone.

Number spoofing with spam being sent to your contact list.

It isn't in my sent messages. I checked although I didn't think it would be since I didn't send it and no I didn't accidentally go to a porn site. Thank you though

I guess I don't really understand the whole spoofing thing. Can it happen by opening a questionable email? My friend goes to alot of gambling sites. . .I just don't feel like its on my end because the only thing I do on my phone is play games on irazoo

    Hey Cricket,

As Chuck said, number spoofing is the likely culprit. What has probably happened is your friend's phone was compromised and contacts were sent to a bad actor. Since the bad guys know that you are one of his friends, the idea is that they will use a "trusted" number to make it seem as if phishing links are coming from your number, even though they are in actuality coming from an automated service controlled by the attackers.

There is sadly not much that can be done about this, but your friend may wish to be careful about the sites to which they go and apps which they install in the future.

Number spoofing can also be random. Yours just happened to get generated, and your friend got spammed by it.

It could be just coincidence. But could also be as TT says, your friend's contacts, or at least the call log, got sent or leaked out by a rogue app to somewhere nefarious and they are now getting spammed back.

Are they getting spammed by other known numbers besides yours?

I have a simpler explanation. When you download certain apps then give permissions, you give access to your contacts sometimes. That app developer has your phone number inventoried with your contacts. If your number and contacts are later sold or distributed somehow, the buyer would probably send out spam coming from the connected number contact via spoofing for greatest success of link or click bait.

Another friend of both of ours said that she had the same thing happen except the link said it was coming from the friend that is receiving them from someone claiming to be me(the friend of mine that is in my original post)

It's more likely that the friend is, given that he's the one visiting gambling sites, which are often run by organized crime as fronts for cyber crime.

I assumed “the friend” and the OP are one and the same...
