    When i do a device software update, all my contacts within my sms window show as numbers and not my contacts names. I still have the contacts (set-up with names and the numbers) in my contact app, but its like they're disjointed from my sms window.

    A reboot can take care of this problem. It's just the phone still setting up certain things, among which are the contact details. Even when you have done a non destructive upgrade.
