How come blackberry doenst have an app that allows us to print wirelessly to a home network like apple has or the other phones have. We have to print to an outside entity. Makes no sense. with iPhone you just hit print in the menu and it picks up the nearest wifi printer.

I have a Canon printer. I use their Android app and it works perfectly.

    For generic use, use PrintHand.

Any file type can be "shared" to your app for printing with either of these.

A very good question. Yet we tout or hand set as a "business" tool.

PrintHand is available in BlackBerry World and Amazon has several alternatives as well. PrintHand has been flawless with my office Ricoh and several customer devices ranging from HP to Sharp.

It would be nice to have native capabilities for printing from the hub, but at least with most documents and pictures the Share option will give you the ability to send the file to a printing app.

None of the apps mentioned or I have researched work as naturally and instinctively as the iPhone or iPads. They limit you to what you can print, only docs not email, and or have to print to an outside kinkos or something. Or you have to send it to your computer and print from there. What's the point of that? Not very convenient. Or I'm missing something

So with print hand. You have to send whatever you want to print, to your computer first then print from there?

No, you can send it directly to the printer.

Your computer has nothing to do with it. It is direct to the printer. Computer can be off. Device software has the drivers.

Have you got PrintHand to work? I've downloaded it from Snap, but it keeps saying that I need to download some other Android files to be able to view/print any document (including Word, PDF), and when I hit install, it of course doesn't work.

    Any tips? Thanks!

I agree with the OP. This functionality should be baked into the BB10 OS. This is one of the few modern features that is missing from BB10. I will post this on icanmakeitbetter.com and others should as well.

How do other phones handle the plethora of printer drivers out there? PrintHand has an online DB of hundreds of drivers that can be downloaded either automatically or by selecting what you need manually. This is likely one reason we don't see this integration in the OS.

From a technical perspective I can't answer your question. My kid has a 4 year old iPod Touch that can print from the OS without an app. My wife's new LG G3 does it also. My WIFI HP printer has an email address that prints the email and most attachments. That is my personal work around for this missing functionality in BB10.

AirPrint handles the driver issue for iPhone, although the printer has to be AirPrint compatible, otherwise you're out of luck.

So that answers my question. If the printer has some email address feature presented over its wifi network, or whatever airprint requires, a phone can send to it. But that is still a long way from a real print management feature on a phone. In a business environment, most printers are just hard wired, not wireless, at least not directly from the printer itself. A PC on the same network can connect to a printer, via ethernet or wireless to a WAP, then over ethernet. PC drivers specific to the OS and printer model are installed to the PC to manage the formatting. This is still a bit much overhead to expect a phone to be capable of out the box. Hence a 3rd party app like PrintHand.

My Ethernet only printers work just fine with PrintHand. So long as the wireless network is on the same network as the Ethernet network in an environment you should be able to print.

Yes, because PrintHand handles the drivers needed for the job. It's a very useful app for me, but am not permitted to use my BlackBerry at work, iphone only, and that does not have any printer connectivity...no printers use Airprint.
