It seems Whatsapp finally made their chat platform with end to end encryption while BBM at best scrambles data during compression.

So the only reason to use BBM has vanished with competition gaining ground in security. There is also talk now that the big tech companies are creating a standard for end to end encryption for their web email services since all email services will use the same format to secure their backend.

    Cobra Commander,

WhatsApp uses encryption but operates using insecure channels in which the keys are stored centrally, masking key software weaknesses. Storm Shadow agree's...whatsapp is not true end to end a he defines it but they made progress over the last year or so.

Really? TextSecure app didn't store keys centrally. Why would WhatsApp change that?

Where did you read that they store keys centrally?

Last nail in BBMs coffin with WhatsApp going end to end encrypted though. Without Video what's the point (spare me the pin saga as if someone has your number you get the text!) in using BBM now unless it's for shared calendar?

I thought the keys changed for every message and were never persisted anywhere. They only lived in memory and were then discarded?

Good question. I'm still reading about it, this may shed some light on how it's done...

There's also a white paper with the nitty gritty: https://www.whatsapp.com/security/Wh...Whitepaper.pdf
