I am looking to buy a passport but wonder what will happen if BB10 is no longer supported, will the phone be a paper weight or will it be useable for a number of years?

It will still be usable for a few more years.

Well, just for kicks, sometimes I still use a legacy device that hasn't been supported in years and works fine for emails, text and phone calls.
So, it's not like the Passport will just cease to function.

If you're not into having all the popular apps, you should be fine with the Passport.
I have quite a few native BB10 apps that make using the device great (many threads on here with lists of great native BB10 apps).

Btw, the Passport SE in on sale for USD$410 on ShopBlackberry now.

On the phone, nothing will happen unless your carrier changes all their frequencies (not likely). I have a Motorola Defy bought years ago and it still works just fine on T-Mo (albeit 3g), even wifi calling works. Have a much older Symbian powered Nokia (N-95) -- OS dead, phone company (basically) no longer around... still operates as designed (again, 3g) but I could use today, if I wanted. My next phone may be a z-30.

BlackBerry will support BB10 for the next 3 years guaranteed! Purchase the Passport. It's a great device

Even if BlackBerry stop supporting BB10, the phone will work absolutely normally. It just won't receive updates.
