Using data means that whatever you are accessing over the internet (browsing, email, YouTube, etc.) without using a WiFi connection is being deducted from your allotment of data based on your carrier's monthly cell phone plan. Texting does not use data. If you're concerned about data usage, try to use WiFi wherever possible (although, if you're using your own WiFi router at home, then you'll be using data from your ISP, it's sort of 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other in that case). Voice (calls) are entirely separate, and most carriers (well, at least here in Canada) separate the two costs.

And please note that MMS uses data. If you are thinking you have unlimited texts and you can send a picture/video through a text message, without using data, you are in for a shock.

Excellent point. I should also have mentioned that.

Sending a plain Text message uses SMS and does not use data, while sending a Text with an attachment uses MMS and requires both a voice and data connection.
