Press any of the volume keys or you could press the silent key on the screen.

I just usually tap the red "end call" icon on the screen. The caller still hears ringing, but the phone is silenced.

This has not worked for me. I have tried to do that.
What about ... is there a way to turn the volume off for the day or a short period of time using the buttons?

Use the 'help' app to search about silencing your notifications.

I'll give you a hint: when you're on the homescreen or hub, long hold the letter Q and it will switch to silent. Long hold again to go back.

Otherwise, swipe down from the top or click on the time while you're on the homescreen or hub, and click the 'bell' next to the word 'notification '
