If I buy a SIM card, say from Rogers, do I have to buy any type of plan when I visit Canada? Can I just use the network? I'm sure a data plan is required if I plan on using IM or email, right? How about my ability to use BBM? Does that require purchasing a data plan too?

You can use any of these on wifi, therefore you don't have to buy data. But yes, you do need to purchase some sort of package that includes minutes for voice or text. Of course you can buy a package that includes data as well. Just simply using the sim won't work, because you will get a local #.

If you absolutely have to go with Rogers, look at Fido too--Rogers' B carrier (like Cricket is to AT&T.) Rates might be lower for the same exact coverage.
