Because the person on the way to the mall MET this man/wives. When you meet someone you are generally face to face with them, implying they are coming FROM where you're going TO.

If they were also going to the mall I would tend to use a different phrase such as, "ran into", "overtook", "passed".

If you think that explanation is confusing, get someone from Newfoundland to explain it!
