Automatically updated to latest software but now seems to switch off at least once a day saying battery empty, however 2 minute before battery not even in amber or red! Also news apps not updating and social apps sluggish.

I'm assuming you did an OTA update.
Try a hard reboot...it might settle things down .If it doesn't then reload your OS using BBLINK rather than a security wipe from device.
