With my Bold, I could have the device turned off (during sleep) and still be awakened at the pre-set time. It seems that the Classic's alarm doesn't sound unless the phone is turned on. Am I missing something?

Unfortunately, BB10 devices have to stay on for the alarm to sound. However, you can put it into bedside mode, so all other notifications, lights etc. will be off.

BlackBerry 10 doesn't have a 'stand by off mode' like bbos7 devices.
    Phone must be on

The Bold didn't really turn off. It went into a standby mode which is why it came on so quickly verses pulling the battery.
The Classic really turns off, so everything is shut down.
Best bet is to configure bedside profile to your liking by disabling all you would like off during this mode.
