In contacts you add a land line, fax and mobile number next to the relevant heading but all these numbers appear next to the text symbol below when obviously you cannot text using a land line number. Seems a waste of time and space so why do it.

Who knows. Maybe a business reason?
a lot of landline viop companies offer sms service now. comcast, vonage, etc...
If I am not mistaken, some land lines can receive texts.
