Hi I have a z10 which I am switching to a Q10 and I need to change my old email address on the z10 but I forgot my password and bb will only send the password answer to the old email address which is now invalid. How can I get my password changed. Thanks

Go to the homepage of the host address of your email address(e.g www.yahoomail.com for yahoo addresses) and click on forgot password on the signin page.
Follow the instructions thereafter.

sorry not following you, when I hit forgot password it says it will send the answer to my email which is now no longer valid so I can not receive my password

It actually won't do that.
It will ask you to answer some questions you used when you opened the account and once, you answer them correctly, it will ask you to enter a new password for your account.
It will only send a new password to your email address if you have a secondary mail for that.
It cannot send your password to the mail which you are trying to recover the password for.
